Course Overview

Why 6 months? Beekeeping runs on the flowering calendar: this program takes you from empty hive to your first honey harvest across one build-up-and-flow season — siting and baiting hives, catching colonies, managing them through the build-up, and harvesting when the flow peaks. The bees do the work; your job is to give them a home, protection, and to take the crop at the right moment.

Structure: 6 monthly modules → lessons → practical assignments → a 10-question quiz each month → final business project.

MONTH 1 — Bee Biology, Products & Planning

Lesson 1.1 — Why bees are the lightest-touch farm business

  • No feed bills, no daily labour: a colony forages 3+ km in every direction and feeds itself; a well-run hive needs attention hours per MONTH, not per day.
  • Income stack: honey (10–25 kg/hive/year typical for African top-bar/local conditions, more on strong flows), beeswax, propolis, and pollination value for your own crops (+20–30% yields on many fruits and legumes).
  • Honey never spoils, stores without electricity, and always sells — the ideal remote/rural cash crop.

  • The year: build-up on early flowers → the honey FLOW (main flowering) → dearth (dry/cold, colony lives on stores) → repeat. Your entire calendar hangs on knowing your local flow months.

Lesson 1.3 — Reading the flowering calendar

  • Great African bee forage: acacias, msasa/miombo woodland, eucalyptus, citrus and mango, sunflower, moringa, aloes (dearth rescue), cotton and many crop weeds.
  • Build your local calendar: which of these flower in which months within 3 km of your site — elders and existing beekeepers know it by heart; write it down.
  • One hive's flight range covers ~2,800 hectares — you're not farming your plot, you're harvesting the landscape.

Lesson 1.4 — Planning the enterprise

  • Starter scale: 5–10 hives — enough for real honey volume, few enough to learn on; expect 60–70% occupation in year one from baiting.
  • Check the rules: some countries register apiaries/honey sales; forestry areas may need permits for hive placement — one office visit now.
  • Budget priority order: protective suit and smoker FIRST (never compromised), then hives, then processing kit.

  • Recommended path: start with KTBs (build 5 from one plan), add Langstroths as income grows. KTB spec that matters: top bars exactly 32 mm wide (the natural comb spacing African bees build).

Lesson 2.2 — The kit

  • Full suit (overall + zipped hood/veil), thick gloves, gumboots with trousers OVER them — African bees find every gap; tape yours.
  • Smoker: fuel with dry cow dung, sacking or dried leaves; smoke masks alarm pheromone and triggers honey-gorging (calmer bees). Light it BEFORE suiting up; a dead smoker mid-hive is how bad stories start.
  • Hive tool (or flat chisel), bee brush/feather, bucket with lid for cut comb, torch with RED light for night work (bees don't fly to red).

Lesson 2.3 — Siting the apiary (safety is a location decision)

  • 200–300 m minimum from homes, paths, roads, schools, penned/tethered animals and shared water; behind a 2 m screen (hedge, shade-cloth, maize) so flight lines rise above people.
  • Morning sun, midday shade (heat melts comb), wind protection, water within 500 m (or provide a dripping container — bees NEED water and will otherwise find the neighbour's trough).
  • Hives on stands 60–100 cm high with greased legs or ant guards — ants, honey badgers and hive beetles are the robbers; wire-strap lids against badgers where they occur.
  • Space hives 1–2 m apart, entrances facing away from your working side.

Lesson 2.4 — Baiting: getting bees for free

  • African swarming seasons fill empty hives on their own: rub the inside with beeswax and propolis, add a few drops of lemongrass oil (mimics scout pheromone), and hang/place hives before swarm season.
  • Best bait sites: 2–3 m up a tree edge facing morning sun; move occupied hives to the apiary at night after 2–3 weeks of settling.
  • Alternatives: buy a nucleus colony from a beekeeper, or transfer a wild colony (advanced — do it first with an experienced keeper).

MONTH 3 — Working the Bees: Inspections & Colony Reading

Lesson 3.1 — The inspection protocol (African edition)

  • When: late evening/dusk, calm warm weather, never before rain or in wind; never in daytime near people or animals.
  • Approach from behind/side, 3–5 good smoker puffs at the entrance, wait 60–90 seconds, then work under the lid with smoke ahead of your hands.
  • Move like honey: slow, no bumps, no crushed bees (crushing releases alarm pheromone = escalation). 10–15 minutes maximum; long openings chill brood and enrage guards.
  • If the colony boils out at you: close up calmly, walk (don't run flailing) through bushes to break pursuit, and try another evening — some colonies are hot; requeening or splitting calms lines over time.

Lesson 3.2 — Reading the combs

  • Healthy brood nest: solid slabs of pearly larvae and tan capped brood in the centre bars, pollen arcs around them, white capped honey outside — the "target" pattern.
  • Queen-right without seeing her: EGGS (tiny standing rice grains, one per cell) mean she laid within 3 days. No eggs + emergency queen cells = queenless; scattered "shotgun" brood = failing queen or disease.
  • Stores check: outer bars heavy with capped honey = good; light hive going into dearth = mark for feeding or early harvest restraint.

Lesson 3.3 — The colony's calendar decisions

  • Build-up: give space ahead of the bees (empty bars toward the brood nest in a KTB) — crowded colonies swarm away with half your workforce.
  • Swarm signs: queen cells like peanut shells on comb edges, bearding at the entrance — split the colony (take 3–4 brood bars + bees into a new hive) and you've turned swarming into a free second colony.
  • Absconding (the African specialty — the WHOLE colony leaves): triggered by heat, ants, beetles, hunger, frequent disturbance or harvesting too hard. Every management rule in this course is partly an anti-absconding rule.

Lesson 3.4 — Dearth feeding (rescue only)

  • Feed 1:1 sugar syrup in an internal/entrance feeder only when stores are critically light in dearth — never during the flow (it adulterates honey) and never open-feeding (it starts robbing wars between hives).

Lesson 4.2 — Diseases and the African advantage

  • African honey bees largely tolerate varroa mites and resist many brood diseases that devastate other continents — the flip side of their defensiveness. You mostly manage PESTS, not pathogens.
  • Still watch for: foul-smelling, sunken, perforated brood cappings (foulbrood — report to bee inspector/vet where present; don't trade combs), chalky white mummies at the entrance (chalkbrood — requeen, ventilate).
  • Hygiene rules: never move combs between apiaries carelessly, never buy old combs, sterilise the hive tool between sick and healthy hives (smoker flame works).

Lesson 4.3 — The strong-colony doctrine

  • Every pest and disease answer is the same answer: a STRONG colony defends itself — beetles patrolled, moths evicted, robbing repelled.
  • Keep colonies strong by: space ahead of growth, stores never robbed to zero at harvest, young productive queens (splits/requeen every 1–2 years), and minimal well-timed disturbance.
  • Unite weak colonies (newspaper method: stack with a paper sheet between; they merge as it's chewed through) rather than nursing two losers into the dearth.

Lesson 4.4 — The apiary safety audit

  • Quarterly walk-through: stand legs greased? screens intact? lids strapped? water point flowing? no comb litter (beetle nursery)? neighbours still happy? first-aid + antihistamine in the kit? escape route clear?
  • Sting protocol: scrape (don't pinch) stings out fast — venom pumps for a minute; smoke the sting site (masks the "sting here" pheromone); many stings or any breathing/face swelling = clinic immediately.

MONTH 5 — The Honey Harvest

Lesson 5.1 — When to harvest

  • Harvest at the END of the flow, evening, good weather — and take only combs that are 75%+ CAPPED: capping is the bees' certificate that moisture is below ~18–19% and the honey is ripe. Uncapped "green" honey ferments in the bucket.
  • The golden restraint rule: leave the brood nest untouched and leave the colony 30–40%+ of its stores (more entering dearth) — greedy harvesting = absconded hives and no crop next year.
  • A KTB harvest: smoke, lift honey bars from the far end, brush bees off each comb back into the hive, cut comb into the lidded bucket, close within 15 minutes.

Lesson 5.2 — Processing comb honey (no machines needed)

  • Crush-and-strain: cut/ crush capped comb → drain through a clean cloth/fine sieve into a food-grade bucket, 24–48 h in a warm room → settle 2–3 days → skim foam → bottle. Never heat above ~40°C (kills enzymes, ruins flavour and the "raw" premium).
  • Hygiene = shelf life: everything washed and DRY (water in honey → fermentation), no smoking indoors over open honey, lids sealed tight (honey pulls moisture from air).
  • Langstroth path: uncap and spin frames in an extractor — combs return to hives and the next crop comes faster.

Lesson 5.3 — Wax: the second crop

  • The strained crushings are beeswax: melt in a water bath (NEVER direct flame — wax is flammable), strain through cloth, cool into blocks.
  • Wax sells to candle-makers, cosmetics producers, and back to beekeeping as foundation/bait — typically 8–10% of honey weight and often a better price per kg than honey.

Lesson 5.4 — Quality that commands premiums

  • Grade as you bottle: clear strained honey (premium jars), cloudy first-strain (cooking grade), cut-comb squares in clear tubs (the top-price product — zero processing!).
  • Label: pure raw honey, apiary location, harvest month, weight — and NEVER blend in sugar syrup; adulteration destroys the reputation the whole business stands on.
  • Crystallised honey is NOT spoiled — it's proof of purity; warm the jar in warm water to re-liquefy and teach your customers the same.
