Lesson 2.3 — Early stand and thinning

Lesson 6.3 — Scheme credit and the debt spiral to avoid

Most African cotton schemes supply inputs on credit deducted at delivery. This is convenient but creates a risk: crop failure or poor yield means debt carried into next season. Avoid the spiral: grow only what you can manage well; don't over-commit on area when family labour is uncertain; insist on records of input credit received and deducted (your receipt is your audit); and keep 10–20% of your cotton separate as the emergency float for next season's cash needs.

Seed cotton
Unginned cotton as harvested — lint fibres still attached to the seed; sold to ginneries.
Lint
The white fibre separated from the seed by the ginnery — the internationally traded commodity (~38–42% of seed cotton weight).
Ginnery
A processing facility that separates lint from seed, bales the lint, and crushes seed for oil and cake.
Gin price
Price per kg of seed cotton paid by the ginnery at collection; set by scheme, market or government board.
Outgrower scheme
A contract arrangement: ginner supplies seed, inputs (on credit) and a purchase price; farmer delivers seed cotton at harvest.
Economic threshold
