The Scholarship Words

There are real Chinese government scholarships open to students across the continent, and the vocabulary that surrounds them is small enough to learn in one sitting.

学 xué = to study → 学生 student · 学校 school · 大学 university
One character, 学, sits inside all of them. Learn it once and read four words.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Listen to the five words and notice how many contain 学 xué. Circle that character every time you write it.
  2. Repeat each word after the audio five times, keeping the tones sharp — 老师 lǎoshī has a dip then a flat, and learners flatten both.
  3. Write 奖学金 jiǎngxuéjīn — scholarship — ten times by hand. It is three characters: prize, study, gold.
  4. Record yourself saying 我是学生 — wǒ shì xuéshēng — 'I am a student' — and compare it to the model.
  5. Write out 我在学中文 — wǒ zài xué Zhōngwén — 'I am studying Chinese' — on cardboard and put it above your desk or your sleeping place.
  6. Say that sentence out loud to one adult and explain what it means.

💡 Why it works

Learning vocabulary in families around a shared character means every new word reinforces an old one instead of competing with it. And knowing the exact words used on scholarship pages means that when you meet those pages, you already recognise what you are looking at.

🔥 Challenge

Find out whether any student from your area has studied in China. Ask what language level they needed.
