Fly It Inside the Phone

Learning to fly is learning to keep track of which way the drone is facing.

A phone held sideways showing a small aircraft hovering above a field, with two thumb circles on the screen.

๐ŸŽ’ What you need

โœ‹ Do this

  1. Open the simulator and just hover. Do not try to fly anywhere yet. Getting it to stay still is lesson one.
  2. Practise up and down only. Notice you are always making small corrections โ€” it never just sits there by itself.
  3. Now fly it away from you and turn left. Easy. Now fly it back TOWARDS you and turn left. Your controls feel backwards โ€” this catches everybody.
  4. Say the reason out loud: left is the drone's left, not yours. When it faces you, its left is your right.
  5. Draw a square in the air, flying forward and turning at each corner, keeping the nose always pointing the way you travel.
  6. Crash it on purpose once. In a simulator, that is free. That is the entire reason simulators exist.

๐Ÿ’ก Why it works

Everybody's first real crash is the same one: the drone turns around, the controls feel reversed, and panic does the rest. Practising that in a simulator costs nothing and saves a real machine that is worth more than a term's school fees. Professional pilots keep using simulators for exactly this reason.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Challenge

Fly a figure of eight without letting the nose swing wildly. Then do it again with the drone facing you the whole time.
