🧰 Hide Quality and What Destroys It

Most of the value lost in African leather is lost before a hide ever reaches a tanning drum. This module takes the defects one at a time - tick marks, brand marks, flay cuts, dung staining, rot - and shows you exactly how a real grading system counts them, where it counts them, and how the jump from one grade to the next is decided. It is the module that turns "this hide looks a bit rough" into a number you can argue about with a buyer.

Three Windows Where a Hide Is Damaged

There are hundreds of things that can be wrong with a hide, and a beginner tries to memorise them as a list. Do not do that. The trade groups hide and skin defects by when they happen, and there are only three windows. Once you can place any mark you find into its window, you know immediately who caused it, who can prevent it, and whether you can do anything about it in your own business.

Window one is pre-slaughter. This is everything that happened to the skin while the animal was alive. Tick damage and other ectoparasite damage. Disease lesions. Scars from fighting, from thorny bush, from wire. Brand marks burned into the hide as an ownership mark. And thin, weak skin from poor nutrition. All of these are healed or healing when the animal is slaughtered, and every one of them is permanent, because the grain layer you learned about in Module 2 does not regrow as fine, tight collagen once it has been destroyed.

Window two is slaughter and flaying. This is damage done by the person removing the hide from the carcass. Knife cuts and score marks straight through the grain layer. Holes. Uneven thickness where the flaying knife dug too deep in one place and skimmed in another. This window lasts about twenty minutes per animal and it is where the most avoidable damage in the whole trade happens.

Window three is post-slaughter, which means curing and storage. Putrefaction from delay before curing. Salt-related damage from poor curing. Insect and mould damage in storage. Damage from folding or stacking hides while they are still wet. Module 4 covers this window completely, because it has its own clock and its own rules.

Now, why does the grouping matter more than the list?

Because each window has a different owner. Pre-slaughter damage belongs to the livestock keeper and, in the case of ticks, to whoever manages the animal's parasite burden. Flaying damage belongs to the person with the knife. Curing damage belongs to whoever received the hide and let the clock run. If you are buying hides, this tells you who to talk to. If you are producing hides, it tells you where your own money is leaking.

And here is the fact that justifies this entire module, and indeed the extension programmes that operate across the region: all three windows are preventable with training. Not reduced. Not managed. Prevented. There is no natural, unavoidable level of flay cuts. There is no minimum acceptable rate of hides rotting before cure. Every mark in windows two and three is there because somebody did not know, did not have time, or did not care, and the first of those three is fixable with a day of teaching.

Window one is a little different, and worth thinking about honestly. You cannot untrain a thorn bush. But tick load is managed, brand placement is decided by a person, and nutrition is a husbandry choice. So even in the window that looks like fate, most of the damage traces back to a decision somebody made.

Hold on to one structural idea from Module 2 as you go through this module. The grain layer is only a small fraction of the total thickness of the hide. That is why a mark that looks shallow to the eye - a tick bite, a light score from a knife, a healed scratch - can pass right through the layer that carries the value. You are not assessing how deep a wound is. You are assessing whether it reached the top few tenths of a millimetre, because that is where the money lives.

One last practical habit. When you inspect a hide, do not simply note that a defect exists. Note which window it came from. A hide covered in tick marks and a hide covered in knife scores may grade the same, but they tell you completely different things about where to spend your next effort. The first is an animal-health conversation. The second is a training conversation with one named person who can be taught to do better tomorrow morning.

Do this today: go to the nearest slaughter slab or butchery, look at one fresh hide, and write down every mark you can see. Then, beside each one, write "live animal", "flaying" or "curing". You have just done your first defect audit.

Flaying Cuts - The Damage You Do Yourself

Of the three windows, flaying is the one that should keep you awake. Every other defect arrives with the animal or arrives with the weather. Flaying damage is created by a person holding a knife, in a few minutes, on a hide that was until that moment perfect.

Here is the mechanism, and it is entirely anatomical. The hide sits on the carcass with the flesh side inward. The flayer works a knife between hide and carcass to separate them. If the knife is held at the wrong angle, it goes into the hide instead of along it. Because the grain layer described in Module 2 is only a small fraction of the total thickness, a cut that feels shallow to the person making it - a cut that does not even go through the hide - can still slice into or through the layer that carries the value.

That is why flay damage takes three forms, and it is worth being able to name each one when you inspect.

A score mark is a shallow knife track on the flesh side that has thinned the hide locally without going through it. It looks minor. On the finished leather it appears as a thin, weak line that may split under tension, and if it reached the grain it will show on the good face after tanning.

A cut is a knife track that has gone deeper, sometimes through the full thickness in places. It is a graded defect with defined size and location thresholds in the grading systems used across the sector.

A hole is a cut that has gone completely through. A hole cannot be closed. Around a hole, the leather is not usable for a piece that carries load, because the fibre network has been severed and the pattern-cutter must simply cut around it. One hole in the belly of an otherwise clean hide is tolerated in the example grading system you will meet in Lesson 5. A hole in the middle of the butt is a different matter entirely, because the butt is the largest, most usable, most valuable panel on the animal.

There is a fourth kind of flay damage that people forget because it is not a mark at all: uneven thickness. A knife cutting too deep in some places and too shallow in others leaves a hide that is thick here and thin there. That hide will tan unevenly because chemicals travel different distances in different places, it will split badly if it is split, and it will produce inconsistent strips when it is cut. Nothing on the surface tells you it is there. You find it with your hands, running them across the flesh side, and with a thickness gauge.

Now the practical part, because there is no chemistry to argue about here. Flay quality is a skill and a set of conditions, and both are improvable in a week.

Give the flayer a sharp knife. A blunt knife requires force, and force is what puts a knife through a hide.

Give the flayer time and light. A carcass being flayed in a hurry in poor light, on the ground, produces damage that a carcass on a hoist in daylight does not.

Keep the hide off the ground. A hide dropped in dirt and dung during flaying picks up contamination that becomes a staining defect in the very next window, and dung and urine staining is itself a graded defect with a measured area threshold.

And pay for quality, not just for hides. If you are a buyer, and you pay the same for a scored hide as for a clean one, you have told every flayer supplying you that the knife work does not matter. Price is the only message that reliably travels back up a supply chain. This is not a lecture about fairness. It is the only mechanism that has ever changed flaying practice at scale.

One closing thought that ties this lesson to the whole course. Every process you will learn from Module 5 onwards costs money to run on a hide. Beamhouse chemicals, tanning agent, labour, drum time, drying space. Those costs are the same on a hide destined for first grade and a hide ruined at flaying. So a flay cut does not just reduce the sale price. It makes you spend the full processing cost on a piece of material that can never repay it.

Brand Marks - Where You Burn Decides What It Costs

Branding hides with a hot iron is common livestock-ownership practice across much of Africa, and it is not going to stop, because it does a real job. A brand proves ownership, deters theft, and settles disputes. Any lesson that begins by telling a livestock keeper to stop branding will be ignored, and it deserves to be.

So this lesson does something more useful. It shows that the cost of a brand to the hide depends almost entirely on where it is placed, and that placement is free to change.

First, the damage itself. A hot iron destroys grain-layer collagen at the brand site permanently. There is no processing step that restores it. Not soaking, not liming, not any tannage, not any finish. The fine, densely woven papillary fibre at that spot is gone, and what heals over is scar tissue with different fibre structure, different absorbency and a different appearance after dyeing. When you look at a brand on a finished hide, you are looking at a hole in the value, whatever the surface looks like.

Now the part that matters commercially. Grading systems do not simply penalise "a brand mark" as a fixed defect. They weight it by where on the hide it falls.

In the sourced ALLPI example system you will study in Lesson 5, the distinction is drawn like this. A brand mark located entirely within 18 centimetres of the hide's perimeter is a second-grade infraction. A brand mark with any portion falling more than 18 centimetres from the perimeter drops the hide to third grade.

Read that carefully, because it contains the whole lesson. It is not the size of the brand that moves the grade. It is not the number of brands. It is one measurement, taken with a tape, from the edge of the hide to the nearest and furthest points of the brand. And the phrase "any portion" matters: a brand that mostly sits in the edge zone but has one corner reaching past 18 centimetres has crossed the line.

Why would a grading system be built this way? Module 2 gives the answer. A hide is not one uniform sheet. The butt in the middle and rear is the largest, most usable, most valuable panel on the animal, and the perimeter regions - the shanks, the edges of the bellies, the neck extremities - are the parts a pattern-cutter uses last. A brand in the edge zone lands where the material was going to be trimmed or used for low-value pieces anyway. The same brand in the centre destroys the panel that the whole hide was worth buying for.

So here is the conversation you can now have with a livestock keeper, and it is a conversation about money, not about being kind to hides.

The brand still proves ownership if it is placed on the shank, the leg or close to the edge of the hide area. It proves ownership exactly as well there as in the middle of the back. The iron costs the same. The labour is the same. The animal's experience is broadly the same. But the hide comes off the carcass one grade higher, and that grade difference is real cash on sale day.

That is a direct, teachable link between an animal-husbandry decision and a hide's cash value, and it is one of the very few places in this whole course where a change that costs nothing at all produces a measurable gain.

Two honest cautions before you go and teach it.

First, 18 centimetres is the threshold in one real, sourced grading system used as this course's worked example. It is not a universal law of the leather trade. Grading criteria are commonly set or adopted at national or trade-association level, and your buyer or your national standards body may use a different figure or a different scheme entirely. Ask them, and use their number when you have it.

Second, no sourced figure exists for how much cash a single brand mark takes off the price of one hide. That coefficient was not retrieved from any source of adequate quality for this course, and it must be obtained from a national grading and price schedule or measured in your own market. What you can teach with full confidence is the structure: position decides the grade, the grade decides the price, and position is free to change.

Ticks, Warbles and the Live-Animal Side of Value

Take a hide from an animal that carried a heavy tick burden and hold it up to the light. You will see a scatter of small marks across the grain, sometimes so many they run together into a pitted, peppered surface. Each one is a place where a parasite fed on or lived under the skin and the fine grain-layer collagen was destroyed and healed badly.

This is the single most common pre-slaughter defect across much of the region, and the reason it costs so much is arithmetic rather than severity. One tick mark is nothing. A hundred tick marks across the butt is a hide that cannot be sold as first grade for any purpose where the surface shows, which is most purposes where the surface earns money.

Grading systems handle these marks in a specific way that you must understand to inspect properly. The visible sign of parasite larvae under the skin is called a warble mark, and grading systems commonly count warbles and set thresholds by two things: by number, and by whether the defect is open or blind.

An open warble has broken through. The grain surface is pierced. There is a hole, however small, in the layer that carries the value.

A blind warble has not broken through. The grain is deformed and marked, but its surface is intact.

Open is worse than blind, and the example grading system reflects it exactly. At first grade, the sourced example allows up to 5 blind warbles in the butt and neck region. At second grade, it allows up to 10 open warbles, or up to 20 blind warbles.

Stop and read those two second-grade numbers together, because the ratio teaches you the principle better than any explanation. Twenty blind warbles are tolerated where only ten open ones are. In the system's own arithmetic, one open warble is treated as costing roughly what two blind warbles cost. That is not a rule to recite. It is a way of thinking about the grain surface: intact but marked is one problem, pierced is another and a bigger one.

Notice also that the first-grade threshold names a region - butt and neck. It is not counting warbles anywhere on the hide equally. Location matters here exactly as it matters for brands, and for exactly the reason Module 2 gave: the butt is the most valuable panel.

Now the point of the lesson, and it is a point that surprises many course audiences.

Reducing tick load and other pre-slaughter parasite burden on live animals is a leather-value intervention as much as an animal-health one.

A livestock keeper who dips, sprays or otherwise manages ticks generally does it for the animal's own sake - for weight gain, for milk, for tick-borne disease. Almost nobody does it for the hide. But the hide is a real product with a real price, and parasite control raises that price by protecting the grain layer through the animal's whole life. If you are a hide buyer or a tanner in a district, this gives you a genuine reason to take an interest in animal health that has nothing to do with charity: the parasite burden in your district is the ceiling on the grade of hide you can ever buy there.

It also gives a livestock keeper an extra line in the calculation of whether tick control pays. The usual calculation counts the animal. Add the hide and the sum changes, because the tick damage accumulated over years of an animal's life is realised as a single lump loss on the day the hide is sold.

Two honest limits to state plainly.

First, no sourced figure was retrieved for how much value a given number of tick marks removes from a hide's price. The counts and thresholds above tell you how a grading system responds to them, not what the price difference is. That price difference must come from your own buyers or your national grading and price schedule.

Second, a current African study measuring how commonly each defect type actually occurs on hides reaching tanneries was located but could not be obtained for this course. So when someone tells you what percentage of hides in a region carry tick damage, ask where the number came from. It did not come from this course, because this course could not get it.

What you can do without any of those numbers is count. Count open warbles and blind warbles separately on every hide you handle for a month, write the counts down, and you will have district-specific data that no document could have given you.

Reading a Grading System Properly

You now know the defects. This lesson gives you the system that turns them into a grade, and then teaches you the more valuable skill: reading a grading table properly instead of reciting it.

The system used here comes from the trainer's manual of the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute, the pan-African body headquartered in Addis Ababa. It is used in this course because it is one of the very few grading frameworks that is genuinely African-sourced and available in full. It sets out four grades built from defect counts, sizes and locations.

First grade. Up to 5 blind warbles in the butt and neck region. Few score marks. At most 1 hole in the belly.

Second grade. Up to 10 open warbles, or up to 20 blind warbles. Dung and urine staining up to 30 centimetres by 30 centimetres per hind shank. A brand mark located entirely within 18 centimetres of the hide's perimeter.

Third grade. Defects covering up to 30 percent of the hide area. A brand mark with any portion falling more than 18 centimetres from the perimeter.

Fourth grade. Defects covering up to 50 percent of the hide area.

Now read it again, and notice the shape of it rather than the numbers.

First and second grade are described by counting things. Warbles, holes, a measured stain, a measured distance. These are small, localised, countable blemishes on a hide that is fundamentally sound. A grader with a tape measure and patience can settle any argument about them.

Third and fourth grade are described by area percentage. Up to 30 percent. Up to 50 percent. Nobody is counting anything any more.

That change in the language is the most important thing in the table, and most people reading it miss it entirely. The difference between second and third grade is not "more defects" in the abstract. It is a jump from small, countable blemishes to wholesale loss of a third of the hide's usable area. A hide has stopped being a good hide with some marks and become a damaged hide with some good areas.

Learn to see that jump on a real hide, because that is the skill. Reciting "30 percent" is easy and useless. Standing over a hide and knowing, with your eye, that you have crossed from countable to wholesale is what a buyer pays a grader for.

A practical method for estimating area, since guessing at a whole hide is unreliable. Fold or mentally divide the hide into quarters. Estimate each quarter separately as a fraction, then average. People estimate a quarter far more accurately than they estimate a whole, and the errors in the four quarters partly cancel. Do this on ten hides and check yourself against another person's estimate, and your eye will calibrate quickly.

Now the caution, and it is not a small one.

This table is presented as one real, sourced, worked example of how a grading system is built. It is not the grading standard that every country or every buyer uses. Grading criteria are commonly set or adopted at national or trade-association level, and you must confirm what applies in your own market. Ask your buyer which scheme they grade against. Ask your national standards body whether an official hide and skin grading scheme exists. Then compare it with this one and note the differences.

If you take this table to a buyer and insist it is the standard, you will lose the argument and look untrained. If you take it to a buyer and say "this is the system I have been trained on, which do you use, and where do they differ?", you will have a professional conversation and probably learn their scheme in ten minutes.

One more use for this table that has nothing to do with selling. Use it internally. Grade every hide at intake, write the grade in a book with the date and the source, and grade the finished leather that comes out of it. Over a year that book tells you which suppliers, which districts and which slaughter slabs give you hides that make money, and which ones you are quietly subsidising. That is the single most useful dataset a small operation can build, because it is the one no outside document can supply. Nobody can hand you your own suppliers' quality history. You have to write it down.

What Quality Is Worth, and the Hazard Hiding in a Cheap Hide

This lesson answers the question a business owner asks after five lessons of defects: how much is this actually worth to me?

The honest answer starts with what is not available. A direct, per-defect value-loss coefficient - a figure of the form "one brand mark reduces per-hide sale value by X percent" - was not retrieved from any source of adequate quality for this course, for any defect type. Nobody should quote you one on this course's authority. If you need that number, it has to come from your own buyers or from a national grading and price schedule, and getting it is a good afternoon's work.

What is available is stronger than it sounds: the programme-level evidence of what happens when defect rates fall and grading improves across a whole national industry. For a business case, that is arguably more useful than a single defect coefficient anyway.

In Kenya, a 5-percentage-point improvement in the proportion of hides reaching the top wet-blue quality grade was projected to be worth 1.75 million US dollars a year in additional foreign exchange, on an export volume of 1 million hides a year. Read the size of that lever. Not doubling quality. Five percentage points. The wet-blue price range used in that projection was 0.59 to 0.72 US dollars per square foot.

At Sagana Tannery in Kenya, after equipment rehabilitation, hides processed to the top quality grade commanded up to a 20 percent price premium over standard wet-blue. That is the clearest single figure connecting grade directly to price anywhere in this course's evidence, and you should hold it loosely: it is a plant-level, pre-2000 figure and is not verified as a current premium anywhere. It tells you that grade premiums are real and substantial. It does not tell you what yours will be.

Now the figure that keeps everyone honest. In a real before-and-after measurement in the Kiambu and Nairobi target area of Kenya, the share of hides reaching Grade I over the life of one improvement programme moved as follows: cattle hides from 45.6 percent to 46 percent, goatskins from 47.6 percent to 48 percent, sheepskins from 44.3 percent to 45 percent. That is roughly a 0.4 to 1 percentage point absolute gain, and the source itself frames it as a real but incremental result.

Sit with that. A funded programme, over its whole life, moved Grade I share by about half a percentage point. Defect reduction is a slow, compounding improvement, not a one-season fix. If you promise your suppliers or your investors that training will transform grades this year, the evidence says you will be wrong. If you build a system that improves half a point a year and keeps it, you will be running a different business in ten years.

And the prices above, all of them, are old programme-evaluation data, cited to show the size and direction of the value gap and never as a current price. No current African price for raw hides, wet-blue or finished leather was obtained for this course at all. Every price you use must be your own, from your own market, this month.

Now the last thing in this module, and it is not about money.

A cheap hide is sometimes cheap for a reason that will hurt you. An animal that died suddenly, of an unknown cause, without veterinary inspection, is a quality problem before it is anything else: it will usually be poorly bled, poorly flayed and badly cured, because nobody was managing the process professionally. Everything you learned in this module predicts a bad hide.

But it can also be an anthrax risk, and anthrax kills people who handle hides, not only the animals that carried it. Module 4 covers this in full, and you must read it before you buy anything.

The rule that belongs here, in the module about buying and grading, is simple and it is not negotiable. Never accept, buy or process a hide or skin from an animal that died other than by planned, inspected slaughter, unless that animal's cause of death is known and safe. Not at any price. Not as a favour. Not because the hide looks clean, because it will look clean.

That rule costs you nothing except the occasional refusal of a cheap, suspect hide. It is the single control measure that removes almost the entire anthrax risk from your raw-material intake, and it belongs in the same notebook where you write your grades.

1. Into which window does a brand mark fall?

Branding is done on the living animal as an ownership mark. It destroys grain-layer collagen at the site permanently, and no processing step restores it.

2. Why does the trade group defects by window rather than as a single list?

Pre-slaughter damage belongs to the livestock keeper, flaying damage to the person with the knife, curing damage to whoever let the clock run. The grouping turns an observation into an action.

3. Which statement about hide defects is supported by the training literature?

That preventability is exactly why hide-improvement extension programmes exist across the region. The commonest cause of avoidable damage is that nobody was taught.

4. Why can a mark that looks shallow still destroy a hide's value?

You are not assessing how deep a wound is. You are assessing whether it reached the fine, tightly woven top layer, and that layer is thin.

5. You inspect two hides. One is covered in tick marks, the other in knife scores. They grade the same. What is the difference to you?

Grading tells you what the hide is worth today. Placing the defect in its window tells you where to spend your next effort so tomorrow's hides are better.

6. What makes flaying different from the other two defect windows?

Every other defect arrives with the animal or with the weather. Flay damage is made by a person with a knife on a hide that was perfect a minute earlier.

7. Which flay defect leaves no visible surface mark at all?

You find it with your hands on the flesh side or with a thickness gauge. It causes uneven tanning, bad splitting and inconsistent cut strips.

8. Why does a blunt knife cause more flay damage than a sharp one?

The flayer must work the blade between hide and carcass. A blunt edge cannot separate cleanly, so the flayer pushes, and the blade goes into the hide.

9. You buy hides and pay the same price for scored hides as for clean ones. What have you done?

Price is the mechanism that changes flaying practice at scale. Paying flat rates removes any reason for a flayer to slow down and work carefully.

10. Why is a flay cut more expensive than just the lost sale price?

Processing costs the same whether the hide was destined for first grade or was ruined at flaying. The damage is done before your money is spent, and your money gets spent anyway.

11. In the sourced example grading system, what moves a branded hide from second to third grade?

Position, not size or count, decides it. The phrase "any portion" means one corner past the line moves the whole hide down a grade.

12. Why do grading systems weight a brand by position rather than counting brands?

A hide is not one uniform sheet. A brand near the perimeter lands where material would be trimmed or used for low-value pieces; a central brand ruins the butt.

13. Can a brand mark be removed or repaired in the tannery?

What heals over is scar tissue with different fibre structure, absorbency and dye behaviour. The fine papillary fibre at that site is gone for good.

14. What advice about branding actually changes a hide's value at no cost?

The iron, labour and ownership proof are identical. Only the position changes, and position is what the grading system measures.

15. How much cash does a single brand mark take off the price of one hide?

No direct defect-value-loss coefficient for any single defect was retrieved from a source of adequate quality. The structure - position decides grade, grade decides price - is what can be taught with confidence.

16. What is a warble mark?

It is a pre-slaughter, live-animal defect. Grading systems count warbles and set thresholds by number and by whether they are open or blind.

17. Which is the more severe defect and why?

Blind means marked but intact; open means broken through the layer that carries the value. The example system allows 20 blind warbles at second grade but only 10 open.

18. In the sourced example system, how many blind warbles are allowed at first grade?

The threshold is both a count and a location. Location matters for warbles for the same reason it matters for brands - the butt is the most valuable panel.

19. Why is tick control a leather-value intervention and not only an animal-health one?

The usual calculation of whether tick control pays counts only the animal. Adding the hide changes the sum, because years of accumulated grain damage are priced in one transaction.

20. Somebody quotes you a percentage of hides in your region carrying tick damage. What should you do?

The relevant peer-reviewed African study was located but could not be retrieved. Any prevalence figure you are given needs its own source, and it will not be this course.

21. What is the most important thing to notice about the four-grade table?

The change in language is the change in the nature of the hide. Second grade is a sound hide with marks; third grade is a hide that has lost a third of its usable area.

22. How much of the hide area may be defective at fourth grade in this system?

Third grade allows up to 30 percent defective area and fourth grade up to 50 percent. Both are described by area, not by counted defects.

23. What is the correct way to describe this grading table to a buyer?

Grading criteria are commonly set or adopted at national or trade-association level. Presenting a worked example as the universal standard loses the argument and looks untrained.

24. What is a reliable method for estimating defective area on a hide?

People estimate a quarter far more accurately than a whole, and errors across the four quarters partly cancel. Check yourself against another grader to calibrate.

25. What is the most useful internal use of a grading system?

It is the one dataset no outside document can supply. Nobody can hand you your own suppliers' quality history - you have to write it down over a year.

26. What does this course supply on the value of a single defect?

No direct defect-value-loss coefficient was retrieved from any source of adequate quality. What is available instead is programme-level evidence of what improving grades is worth across a whole industry.

Module 3 capstone

Grade ten real hides or skins yourself, using the sourced ALLPI example system, and write the report a buyer would take seriously. Step 1: get access to ten hides or skins at a slaughter slab, hide store or collector's yard, with permission to lay each one flat and inspect it. Step 2: for each hide, draw its outline on a sheet and mark every defect you find in its true position - warbles, tick marks, brand marks, knife cuts, scores, holes, dung and urine staining, and any area already going slippery or smelling of rot. Step 3: for each warble mark write whether it is open, meaning broken through, or blind, meaning not broken through, and count each type separately. Step 4: for each brand mark, measure with a tape how far its nearest and furthest points sit from the edge of the hide, and write both measurements down in centimetres. Step 5: estimate, area by area, what percentage of the whole hide is covered by defects, using a folded-quarters method so you are estimating a quarter at a time rather than guessing at the whole. Step 6: assign each hide a grade against the four-grade example table in Lesson 5, and write one sentence per hide saying which single defect decided the grade. Step 7: count how many of your ten hides were downgraded by something that happened at flaying, and write half a page on what you would say to the flayer.
