Harvest when grain reaches hard dough — a thumbnail can dent but not easily split the kernel, plants yellowing, ~20–25% moisture — and don't wait for field-dry perfection while birds, lodging and shattering eat the margin. Finger millet on a smaller, better-tended plot commonly beats this per hectare on price; pearl millet wins wherever rainfall drops below sorghum's floor. The portfolio IS the strategy: most successful dryland farms run two of the three plus a legume.
Brewery and feed contracts talk to groups with tonnage, not individuals with sacks: aggregation, a clean store, moisture discipline and a weighing scale get a village onto a contract list.
