Course Overview

Sorghum, pearl millet and finger millet are the cereals Africa domesticated for itself: they finish crops on rainfall that kills maize, store for years, and now feed three growing commercial markets — food, brewery malting and poultry feed. Lesson 2.3 — Thinning: the discipline nobody enjoys

Small-seeded cereals are over-sown then thinned at 2–3 weeks to 1–2 plants per station (or in-row spacing for drilled millet). Lesson 3.1 — Striga: the witchweed war

Striga (witchweed) is a beautiful pink-flowered killer: a parasitic plant that fastens onto sorghum, millet and maize ROOTS underground, drinking the crop's water and food for weeks before it even emerges. By the time you see pink flowers, most damage is done — stunted yellowed crops on your most exhausted fields. One plant sheds tens of thousands of dust-like seeds that wait in soil up to 15–20 years, germinating only when a host root grows past.
