Course Overview

Soybean rode the poultry boom from curiosity to contract crop across Africa's maize belts: 40% protein, 20% oil, feed mills hungry for tonnage, and free nitrogen left behind for the maize that follows. It is also a crop of specific, learnable tricks — and this course teaches them in order of return. First, inoculation: the few-dollar sachet of specialist rhizobium that most African soils lack, worth 30–50%+ on new land, taught as a ten-minute technique with a pink-nodule test to prove it worked. Then the population stand this crop demands, phosphorus as the purchased key, the daylength rule behind released-variety discipline, the rust scouting habit, and the quality war against splits, greens and moulds. Harvest is a race the course names honestly — the shattering clock — and storage splits into grain stock and the fragile, premium-earning seed stock. The business module sells into contracts, traders, the town food trade (with the absolute cooked-soy heat rule) and your own livestock rations, and writes the final plan for the maize–soybean pair, because the system margin beats either crop alone.

Month 1: The Protein Crop, the Rhizobium Trap & the Markets

Lesson 1.1 — The protein crop the feed mills are hunting

Soybean is the world's protein workhorse — ~40% protein and 20% oil in one seed — and Africa's fastest-growing field-crop market. The engine is the poultry boom: every broiler and layer ration is built on soybean meal, and most African feed mills import it at painful prices. Add oil pressing, human foods (soy milk, flour, textured 'chunks'), and the crop's nitrogen-fixing gift to the following maize, and soybean has moved from curiosity to contract crop across the continent's maize belts in a decade.

  • Season: 90–130 days by variety; a rains-season row crop for the same land and equipment as maize.
  • Yields: African smallholder average ~1 t/ha; good management with inoculated improved seed reaches 2–3.5 t/ha.
  • Rotation gold: a well-nodulated crop can leave the equivalent of a meaningful nitrogen dressing for next season's maize, plus a clean disease break.

Lesson 1.2 — The one lesson that towers over the rest

Soybean fixes nitrogen ONLY when its roots carry nodules of the right rhizobium bacteria — and here is the trap: the soybean rhizobium is a specialist that most African soils do not naturally contain (unlike cowpea's and groundnut's easy-going partners). An uninoculated soybean crop on new land sits pale, hungry and stunted while its owner blames the seed. The fixes, in order of importance:

  1. Inoculate the seed with soybean-specific rhizobium inoculant at planting — a sachet costing a few dollars that routinely adds 30–50%+ yield on first-time land (Module 2 teaches the technique).
  2. Or plant 'promiscuous' varieties — African-bred lines (many from IITA) that nodulate with native rhizobia; lower ceiling than inoculated specialist varieties, but forgiving where inoculant is unreachable.
  3. Once soybean has grown inoculated on a field for some seasons, the bacteria persist and the response fades — but on NEW land, inoculation is the single highest-return act in this course.

Lesson 2.1 — Seed: fragile, short-lived, handled like eggs

Soybean seed is the most delicate in this college: a thin coat over a living embryo that cracks when dropped, dies young in storage (viability falls sharply after ~8–12 months in ordinary stores), and drinks moisture from humid air. Rules: source fresh certified/QDS seed each season or save your own with real care (dry, cool, hermetic, never dropped in sacks); always germination-test (50 seeds, damp cloth, 5 days — below 70–75%, raise the rate or reject the lot); never plant last year's leftover bag on hope.

Lesson 2.2 — Inoculation technique: ten minutes that grow the crop

  1. Buy soybean-specific inoculant (check the expiry date and that it was kept cool — living bacteria die in a hot shop window).
  2. In shade, on planting day: moisten seed lightly with water (a sugar or gum-arabic solution sticks better), sprinkle the inoculant powder, mix gently until every seed is dusted grey-black.
  3. Plant within hours, into moist soil — sun and heat kill the bacteria on the seed; never leave inoculated seed baking in an open pan.

Practical Assignment — Month 2: Source fresh seed and run the 50-seed germination test, recording the result and your seed-rate adjustment. Lesson 3.1 — Weeds: win the first six weeks

Lesson 3.4 — The rotation seat

Soybean's classic seat is between maize crops: it returns nitrogen, breaks cereal pest cycles, and its early canopy fits the machinery and labour calendar maize built. Never soybean after soybean repeatedly (rust, nematodes and soil diseases build); groundnut and beans share some diseases — space legumes apart in the cycle. Feed mills and food processors buy QUALITY, and soybean's quality is made at the margins of harvest. Lesson 5.2 — Threshing gently, drying honestly
