100 Thinking Games

Eight you can play right now on this page, and ninety-two you can play with chalk, stones and bottle tops. Every one of them builds the same four skills that AI itself runs on.

An honest word before you start. These games will not raise your child's general intelligence — no game does, and companies have been fined for claiming otherwise. What they genuinely build is computational thinking: breaking a problem into steps, spotting patterns, sorting things by a rule, and finding your own mistake. Those are learnable, they transfer to real work, and they are exactly what school systems in China are now teaching from age six.

Why it gets harder. Every game raises its own level after three correct answers in a row, and drops back one level after two mistakes. A child should be getting roughly one in four wrong. If they get everything right they are bored; if they get everything wrong they will quit. The games chase that middle on their own.

How to run these so nobody gets bored

Stop before they want to stop
Twenty minutes at full attention beats an hour of drifting. End on a win, while they are still asking for one more. That is what makes them come back tomorrow.
Never give the answer
Ask "what made you choose that?" instead. A child who explains their wrong answer usually finds the mistake themselves — and that is the whole skill.
Let them beat you
Play badly on purpose sometimes, and be genuinely wrong in front of them. A child who sees an adult make a mistake and fix it calmly learns that mistakes are normal, not shameful.
Let them invent the rules
Once they know a game, ask them to change one rule and see what happens. Inventing a rule is harder and better than following one.
Mix screen and ground
The chalk versions are not the poor cousin. Moving your whole body through a maze teaches sequencing better than tapping arrows. Do both.
Older child teaches younger
The fastest way to find the gaps in a ten-year-old's understanding is to ask them to teach a six-year-old. It also doubles how many children you reach.
The four skills, in plain words. Sequencing — putting steps in the right order and finding the one that is wrong. Patterns — noticing what repeats and predicting what comes next. Classification — sorting by a rule, which is most of what AI actually does. Debugging — the calm habit of hunting your own mistake instead of giving up.
