Module 10

Cattle are large, powerful animals and bulls kill people. This module covers the two enclosures every beef enterprise needs and why they are not the same thing, the measured dimensions of a working crush and race, the procedures that keep handlers alive, and the two routine procedures - castration and dehorning - where doing it early costs the animal far less than doing it late. A simple crush is one of the highest-value safety investments a growing herd can make, and this module tells you what to build and how to work it.

Two Enclosures, Two Different Jobs

Most African cattle farms have one enclosure. A working beef enterprise needs two, and they do completely different jobs. Confusing them is one of the commonest and most dangerous mistakes in cattle handling.

The first is the kraal, or boma. It is usually the simplest and cheapest structure on the farm, and its job is to hold the herd together overnight: safe from predators, safe from theft, and in one known place. Secondarily it holds cattle for short periods during the day, for example while they wait their turn at the crush. That is the whole purpose. A kraal is a container for a group.

The second is the crush, together with its race and its pens. Its job is entirely different: to restrain one animal at a time, safely enough that a person can put their hands on it. Dosing, vaccinating, pregnancy testing, dehorning, castrating, ear tagging, or simply getting close enough to read a tag number - all of these need one animal held still, not thirty animals milling about.

Here is why the distinction matters so much. A kraal is not designed for close individual restraint. Trying to vaccinate, dose or examine a single animal inside an ordinary kraal, where the whole herd is loose together, is significantly more dangerous and significantly less reliable than doing the same job through a proper crush and race.

Think through what actually happens. You want to dose cow 042. She is in a kraal with twenty-nine other animals, some of which have calves at foot. To reach her you walk in among them. Cattle move away from you, then around you, then behind you. You are now inside a moving mass of animals each weighing several hundred kilograms, with your attention fixed on one of them and your back to the rest. If any animal panics, or if a cow decides you are too close to her calf, you have nowhere to go and no wall between you and her. Every one of those risks disappears when the same animal walks up a race and stands in a crush with you outside it.

And the job itself goes better. A dose given to a half-restrained animal in the open is often a dose partly spilled, partly refused, and never properly recorded. A vaccination that misses is worse than no vaccination, because you now believe an animal is protected when it is not.

So a farm with only a kraal and no crush is limited to whatever can be done to a loose animal, or an animal roped in the open. That is a real handling-safety hazard and it puts a ceiling on the herd management taught in the rest of this course. You cannot run a vaccination plan by life stage, dose accurately to weight, pregnancy test at the end of a breeding season, or keep the individual records that make culling possible, if you have no reliable way to hold one animal still.

That is why investment in even a simple, low-cost crush is one of the highest-value safety investments a growing herd can make. Note the word simple. A crush does not have to be steel and concrete. It has to be strong enough not to break, correctly sized so an animal cannot turn around inside it, and built so that no person ever has to be inside it with a loose animal.

One honest gap before you start building. This course gives you measured dimensions for a crush and race in the next lesson, drawn from a South African beef extension guideline. For the kraal, no specific African sizing, fencing-material or predator-proofing figure could be obtained for this course, so none is supplied here. If you need to know how big a kraal should be for your herd, what fencing material stands up to your local predators, or how high it should be, that has to come from your local extension officer or from farmers nearby who have solved the same problem in the same conditions. What is certain regardless of the missing numbers is the structural point of this lesson: a kraal secures the herd, and it does not restrain an individual.

One more practical consequence. Because the crush is where individual work happens, it is also where records happen. Module 11 asks you to write down what each animal received and what it weighed. The place that gets written down is the place the animal stood still. Build the crush with somewhere dry to stand and write, and the record-keeping becomes something you actually do rather than something you intend to do.

The Crush, the Race and the Pens: Real Dimensions

This lesson gives you the numbers. They come from a South African beef production extension guideline and they are a workable, tested design reference. Two honest notes before you build. No comparable dimension set from an East, West or Central African extension source could be obtained for this course, so where local designs differ from these figures, do not assume the local design is wrong. And a design is only as good as the timber, poles or steel you build it from: these numbers tell you the shape, not the strength.

Crush width: 680 mm for smaller animals, up to 750 mm for very large cattle. This is the most important single dimension and it is worth understanding why. Too wide and the animal turns around inside the race, which is dangerous for it and for you and defeats the entire purpose of restraint. Too narrow and it can get stuck, which is worse. If your herd runs small-framed indigenous cattle, build toward 680 mm; if you handle large-framed or crossbred animals, build toward 750 mm.

Crush height: 1,500 mm for most breeds; 1,900 mm for larger or wilder cattle. Wilder is doing real work in that sentence. Height is what stops an animal attempting to climb or jump out of the race, and an animal that is rarely handled will try things a quiet animal never attempts.

Crush and race length: a minimum of about two cow-lengths, taking a medium-sized cow as roughly 1,700 mm for planning purposes. So a minimum working race of about 3,400 mm. The reason for at least two animal-lengths is queueing: an animal in the crush and one behind it, so the next animal is already committed forward rather than being pushed in from an open pen each time.

Slope: build the race with a slope of about 1 in 70, angled across the natural slope of the ground rather than straight up or down it. This is a drainage rule. Rain must run off and away, rather than pooling exactly where the handler stands or eroding a channel down the length of the race. A race that becomes a mud trough after every storm is a race where both cattle and people slip, and slipping in a confined space with a large animal is how people get badly hurt.

Holding pen: a minimum of 2.3 square metres per mature cow. This is where animals wait, and they need room to stand without being crushed against each other.

Forcing pen: 1.67 square metres per mature cow. Read that number against the one before it. The forcing pen, the smaller yard immediately behind the crush entrance, deliberately gives each animal less space than the holding pen. That is not a mistake or a saving. A tighter, more crowded forcing pen encourages cattle to move forward into the race rather than being able to turn back. Give animals room to turn around behind the crush and they will, and you will spend the whole morning pushing the same animal forward twice.

Vertical restraining posts or rails should be set at roughly one-animal intervals along the race. These are what let you stop an animal moving forward or backward at the point where you need to work on it.

Calves: you generally do not need a separate small facility. Calves can be worked through a full-sized adult crush by adding cables, boards or bars at a lower height, so a smaller animal cannot slip under or turn. That is a genuinely useful piece of news for a smallholder deciding what to build - one facility, adapted, rather than two.

Now work an example. Say you have 25 mature cows to put through the crush in one day.

  1. Holding pen: 25 multiplied by 2.3 square metres equals 57.5 square metres. That is roughly 7.5 metres by 7.5 metres.
  2. Forcing pen: if you push them forward in batches of 6, that is 6 multiplied by 1.67, which is about 10 square metres, roughly 3 metres by 3.3 metres.
  3. Race: at least 3,400 mm long, 680 to 750 mm wide, 1,500 mm high unless your cattle are large or wild.

Those three lines are a buildable plan, and you can price the poles for them this week.

One last principle that costs nothing. A well-designed, well-maintained facility is itself a safety measure. A crush that traps an animal partway, a gate that does not latch securely, or a race with a gap an animal can put a leg through, converts a routine job into a high-risk event every single time it is used. Walk your facility before every handling day and fix what is loose.

Bulls Kill People

This lesson is written as procedure, not as a warning, because warnings do not save anybody and procedures do.

The sourced fact it is built on is short and blunt. Cattle, and especially bulls, cause regular injuries and deaths to handlers, and that risk is worsened when horns have not been removed. That comes from a beef production extension guideline, and it is the reason handling facilities exist at all: they are there primarily to protect the people working the herd, not only to make dosing and dipping easier.

No numeric injury or fatality rate is given in this course, because none could be obtained to a standard worth teaching. Do not read the absence of a number as an absence of risk. The qualitative finding is documented and it should be treated with full seriousness.

Here are the procedures.

Rule one. Never enter a crush, a race, or any small pen with a bull, or with any animal showing aggressive behaviour, without an escape route already identified and already clear. Not a theoretical escape route. A specific gap, gate or fence you have looked at, that you can reach, that nothing is stacked against. The reasoning is simple and there is no way around it: a person on foot cannot outrun a bull in the open, and in a confined space cannot escape at all without a planned exit. Decide the exit before you go in, every time, including the times you are only going in for a moment.

Rule two. Treat a cow with a new calf as you treat a bull. A cow that is normally quiet will defend a newborn, and she is heavy enough and fast enough to kill. If you must handle a new calf, know where the dam is, keep a barrier available, and have a second person watching her.

Rule three. Never work the herd alone. Working cattle alone is a known risk multiplier: no one to help, no one to raise an alarm, no one to take over if something goes wrong. No quantified figure for solo-handling injury rates was available for this course, and none is invented here, but the logic needs no number. If you are alone and an animal knocks you down in a pen, nobody knows.

Rule four. Horns. Horned cattle are a measurably greater handling risk than dehorned or polled cattle, on the direct evidence of the same source. That makes dehorning a recognised safety investment rather than a cosmetic one. But dehorning is itself a procedure requiring proper technique, pain management appropriate to the animal's age, and it frequently falls under animal-welfare regulation. Whether pain relief is legally required, what may be used, and who may do it, is set by your national authority and differs by country. This course names no drug and no rule as if it were yours. Lesson 5 covers the timing principle that applies to both dehorning and castration.

Rule five. Fix the facility before the animals arrive, not during the job. A gate that does not latch securely, a rail that has worked loose, a gap an animal can get a leg through - each of these converts a routine handling event into a high-risk one, and it does so every single time the facility is used, not just occasionally. Walk the whole facility the day before a handling day, with your hands on every latch.

Rule six. Keep children out. Not near the race, not on the rails, not in the forcing pen. This needs saying explicitly because a handling day looks like an event and children come to watch.

Rule seven. Plan how a difficult animal will be dealt with before the day, not in the moment. Every herd has one or two animals that are dangerous to handle. If you have such an animal, the decision to be made is a management decision, taken calmly: is this animal worth the risk it presents every time it must be handled? Module 11 asks you to record temperament as a routine part of each animal's record, and this is exactly why. A documented history of aggression is a legitimate culling criterion alongside productivity. An animal that endangers your family every year is not paying for itself, whatever its calf weighs.

One closing thought about bulls specifically. A bull is a working animal that earns his keep by settling cows, as Module 3 explained. He is not a pet and he does not become safe with age or familiarity. The most dangerous bull on any farm is usually the one everybody has stopped being careful around.

Moving Cattle Without a Fight

A handling day that turns into a fight is dangerous, slow and expensive. It is also usually avoidable, and most of what makes the difference costs nothing.

Start with how cattle see the world, because it explains most baulking. Cattle have wide-angle vision and are sensitive to sudden movement, noise, and changes in light and shadow. This is a widely repeated principle in the cattle handling literature, and it has a direct practical consequence: loud noise and visual distractions at the crush entrance make animals baulk and back up, which increases both the time and the danger of the whole operation.

Be clear about what this course does not give you. A specific quantified figure for cattle's field of vision or for flight-zone distance, measured on African indigenous breeds, was not available and none is supplied here. You will see confident numbers quoted elsewhere for how many degrees a cow can see or how many metres away her flight zone begins. This course does not repeat them. The handling principle - keep the approach to a crush calm, well-lit and free of sudden visual distractions - is sound and useful without any number attached.

So what do you actually change? Walk the route your cattle will take, at the time of day you will use it, and look for these:

  1. A dark entrance. Cattle move more willingly from light into light than from light into a dark hole. A race entrance in deep shadow when everything behind it is bright sun is a place animals will stop.
  2. Something moving at the far end. A person leaning over the race ahead of the animal, washing on a line, a dog, a plastic sheet flapping. Anything moving at the point the animal is being asked to walk toward will stop it.
  3. Noise. Shouting, banging on rails, radios, a vehicle running. Noise at the entrance does the opposite of what people intend: it pushes animals back rather than forward.
  1. Sharp changes in the ground. A puddle, a drain, a shadow across the floor that looks like a hole. Cattle stop for these and inspect them.
  2. A visible way back. This is the forcing pen point from Lesson 2 in a different form. If an animal can see space behind it, it will use it.

The pattern behind all five is the same. An animal that stops has usually seen a reason to stop. The instinct is to push harder. The better response is to find and remove whatever it is looking at.

Now the second half of a good handling day: planning, so that each animal passes through once.

Think about every job that needs an animal in a crush. Dosing for worms. Dipping or spraying, or a pour-on. Vaccination by life stage. Pregnancy testing at the end of the breeding season. Weighing, or a girth-tape measurement. Ear tagging. Reading tag numbers to update records. Castration or dehorning of young calves.

Run through those as separate events across the year and every animal makes many trips through the race, each one costing labour, stress, weight and risk. Group them and you handle the herd fewer times.

That grouping has to respect biology, so it cannot be total. Vaccination timing is set by life stage and, for reproductive vaccines, by the mating season. Pregnancy testing has to happen after the breeding season ends. Deworming should be done when there is a reason, not simply because the crush is open. So the practical plan is: build the calendar around the events whose timing is fixed by biology, then attach everything flexible to those dates.

A worked example of one handling day, at the end of a breeding season:

  1. Pregnancy test every cow. Record open or in calf against her number.
  2. While each cow is in the crush, read and record her tag, note her body condition and note her temperament.
  3. Girth-tape any animal you need a weight for.
  4. Give any treatment that is due and can be given today.
  5. Draft the open cows into a separate pen as they leave the crush, because that is your culling shortlist and it will never be easier to separate them than at this moment.

That last step is worth its own sentence. The single most valuable output of a handling day is often not the treatment given but the information collected and acted on while the animals are already in hand.

One final rule. Stop before you are tired. Accidents cluster at the end of a long handling day, when people are hurrying to finish, when concentration has gone, and when everybody has stopped checking the escape route.

Castration: Age Matters More Than the Tool

Castration is done on most beef enterprises, for two straightforward reasons: it controls unwanted breeding, and it makes bull calves more manageable and, in many markets, more valuable as steers. The question farmers argue about is which method is best. The evidence says they are arguing about the wrong variable. Age at castration, not the tool used, is the single biggest factor in how much pain and production setback the procedure causes.

First, the three methods in common use, and what is documented about each.

Surgical removal, by direct excision. This produces the most acute pain and the largest cortisol, or stress hormone, spike of the three. But if done cleanly there is no prolonged aftermath.

The Burdizzo clamp, an external crushing tool that severs the blood supply without making an open wound. The pain response is rapid but generally shorter-lived than surgery.

The rubber ring, or elastrator band, which constricts the scrotum and causes the tissue to die by cutting off its blood supply. Here the picture is different from what most people assume. Pain onset is delayed, which is why banding looks gentle to a watching farmer. But chronic discomfort has been documented for up to and beyond four hours after banding when no pain relief is given, and calves have shown pain responses to touch at the site for up to four weeks afterward. The method that looks least dramatic is the one with the longest documented aftermath.

Now the finding that matters more than the choice between them. Age is the dominant factor.

  • Calves castrated at under one week old showed minimal cortisol elevation.
  • Calves castrated at 42 days showed markedly higher pain-behaviour scores than calves castrated at 6 or 21 days old.
  • Early-castrated beef calves also showed a higher average daily gain and a lower inflammatory response in the fortnight after the procedure, compared with later-castrated calves.

Read that last point commercially as well as on welfare grounds. Late castration does not only hurt more, it costs weight. A calf that spends the fortnight after the procedure fighting inflammation is a calf that is not growing at the rate it should be, and Module 4 established that weaning weight, multiplied by calves weaned, is the entire physical output of your herd.

So the practical rule the evidence supports is direct: castrate as early as is practically and safely possible - within the first days to first few weeks of life - rather than waiting until weaning or later.

Two honest caveats. This is general veterinary welfare science, not an African field study. No African-measured dataset comparing castration age against growth setback was available for this course. The underlying biology - younger tissue, a smaller procedure, a shorter healing time - has no obvious reason to differ by region, but treat the specific day-counts above as sourced to that literature rather than as measurements from an African herd.

Now the parts this course will not decide for you. Pain mitigation - local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory drugs - measurably reduces the pain response documented for every method above. In a number of countries, using pain relief for castration and dehorning is a specific animal-welfare legal requirement, not merely good practice. And access to and legal use of anaesthetic and analgesic drugs is itself governed by veterinary medicine regulation that differs by country. So: whether you are required to use pain relief, what you may use, who may administer it, and what withholding period applies afterwards, are all questions for your national veterinary authority. This course names no drug and no dose.

Finally, hygiene, which is the part most often neglected. Every one of these methods creates a wound or the equivalent of one: an open wound with surgery, crushed tissue with the Burdizzo, dying tissue with the band. All three therefore carry a real infection risk, and in an anthrax-endemic or tetanus-endemic area a specific disease risk, if done with unclean equipment. The same applies to dehorning, to branding and to ear tagging. Clean your equipment between animals, and think about what is in your soil before you make a wound in a calf and stand it back in the kraal.

One practical note for planning. Because early castration means castration long before weaning, it is a job that happens at the calf's first handling, not at the big annual handling day. Build that into your calendar: a young calf is small, light and easy to restrain, which is another argument for doing it early that the pain data does not even mention.

Making the Facility Pay for Itself

A crush is not a productive asset in the way a cow is. It does not produce a calf. So it is worth being clear about what it does produce, and how to think about paying for it.

Start with the list of things a crush makes possible that are otherwise impossible or dangerous. Every one of them appears elsewhere in this course:

  • Accurate dosing for internal parasites, to a weight rather than a guess.
  • Dipping, spraying or pour-on application at the correct rate.
  • Vaccination by life stage, given properly and fully.
  • Pregnancy testing at the end of the breeding season, which is what turns an open cow from a suspicion into a fact.
  • Reading and recording individual identification, which is what makes every record in Module 11 possible.
  • Weighing or girth-taping, which is what makes weaning weight a number rather than an impression.
  • Ear tagging, branding, castration and dehorning.
  • Safe, close inspection of an animal that seems unwell.

Look at that list against the arithmetic this course keeps returning to. Total kilograms weaned equals cows exposed, times calving percentage, times calf survival, times weaning weight. Pregnancy testing feeds the calving percentage term through culling. Vaccination and dosing feed the calf survival term. Weighing feeds the weaning weight term. The crush is not a producer. It is what lets you measure and manage the things that produce.

Now the money. In the costing structure of Module 12, a handling facility is a fixed cost of the whole enterprise, not a variable cost attached to any individual cow. That distinction is not bookkeeping fussiness. Variable costs - dip, dose, vaccine, a share of the bull - are what you use to answer the question is this particular cow worth keeping. Fixed costs are what you use to answer the question is this whole enterprise worth running. Mixing them makes both questions unanswerable.

So the facility is built once, then spread across the years it lasts. If a crush costs you a certain sum in poles, timber and labour, and you honestly expect it to stand for a number of years before major rebuilding, the annual charge against the enterprise is that cost divided by those years. This course gives you no price for a crush, because no current, dated African price of adequate quality was available for anything in this course. You get the local prices this month, and you divide.

What you can do without any prices at all is judge whether the facility is worth it, by asking a different question. What is one dead or seriously injured person worth? What is one cow lost because you could not examine her safely? What is a year of vaccination that did not really go in? A crush does not have to earn its cost in efficiency alone.

Now maintenance, which is the part that quietly decides whether a facility stays safe. A facility built well and then left alone for a season is not the same facility. Poles rot at ground level. Wire stretches. Latches wear. Gate hinges drop. Timber splits where an animal has repeatedly hit it. A gap opens at the bottom of the race that a calf can put a leg through.

The rule from Lesson 3 applies here as a routine, not as an emergency: walk the whole facility with your hands on every latch and rail before every handling day, and fix what you find before the animals arrive. That is fifteen minutes, and it is the cheapest safety measure available to you.

A short maintenance list to run through:

  1. Every gate latches securely and stays latched when pushed hard.
  2. No gaps at the bottom of the race that a leg can go through.
  3. No protruding nails, wire ends or broken timber at animal height or handler height.
  4. The race floor is not slippery, and water drains away from where people stand.
  5. Every escape route is clear, with nothing stacked or leaning against it.
  6. The restraining posts or rails still hold.

One more thing to build in from the start, because it is almost free at the time and expensive to add later: somewhere dry to stand and write. A shelf or board at the working position, where a notebook can sit. Every record in Module 11 is either written at the crush or written from memory in the evening, and memory is where records go to die.

Finally, plan the facility for the herd you intend to have, not only the herd you have now. Module 12 covers the growth plan, and one honest conclusion there is that raising output per cow usually beats adding cows on land that is already full. But if you do grow, a race and pens sized for today's twenty cows will be the bottleneck of every handling day for years. Marking out the space for a larger holding pen costs nothing today.

1. What is the primary purpose of a kraal or boma?

A kraal is a container for a group. It secures the herd; it does not restrain an individual, and treating a single animal inside a loose kraal is both more dangerous and less reliable.

2. Why is dosing an animal inside a loose kraal dangerous?

Your attention is on one animal while the rest move around and behind you, including cows with calves at foot, and there is no wall and no escape route.

3. Why is a missed vaccination worse than no vaccination?

A partly spilled or refused dose given to a half-restrained animal leaves you with a false record of protection, which is a worse basis for decisions than knowing the animal is unprotected.

4. What does a crush have to be, at minimum, to be worth building?

A crush need not be expensive. It needs strength, correct width, and a design that keeps the handler outside the structure while the animal is restrained.

5. Why does this course give no kraal sizing or fencing figure?

The structural point - a kraal secures the herd, a crush restrains an individual - stands without a number. The specifications must come from local extension or nearby farmers.

6. Why must a race not be built too wide?

Restraint depends on the animal being unable to turn. Too narrow risks it getting stuck, so the working band is 680 mm for smaller animals up to 750 mm for very large cattle.

7. Why does the forcing pen give each cow less space than the holding pen?

At 1.67 square metres per cow against 2.3 in the holding pen, the crowding is deliberate. Room to turn around behind the crush means the same animal gets pushed forward twice.

8. You have 25 mature cows to hold. Roughly how big should the holding pen be?

25 multiplied by 2.3 square metres is 57.5 square metres, roughly 7.5 metres by 7.5 metres.

9. Why is the race built on a slope of about 1 in 70 across the ground's natural slope?

A race that becomes a mud trough after rain is where cattle and people slip, and slipping in a confined space with a large animal is how handlers get badly hurt.

10. How are calves usually worked?

One adapted facility does both jobs, which matters for a smallholder deciding what to build. The added lower bars stop a smaller animal slipping under or turning.

11. What must be true before you enter a race or small pen with a bull?

A person on foot cannot outrun a bull and cannot escape a confined space without a planned exit. The route must be a specific gap or gate you have looked at, not a theoretical one.

12. Why does this course give no injury or fatality rate for cattle handling?

The sourced finding - that cattle, especially bulls, cause regular injuries and deaths - is clear. No credible rate was available, so none is invented, and the absence of a number is not an absence of risk.

13. Which animal should be treated with the same caution as a bull?

A normally quiet cow will defend a newborn and is heavy and fast enough to kill. Know where the dam is, keep a barrier available, and have a second person watching her.

14. Why is dehorning described as a safety investment?

The same source that records regular handler injuries and deaths notes the risk is worsened where horns have not been removed. Technique, pain management and legality are regulatory matters to check locally.

15. What should be done about an animal with a documented history of dangerous behaviour?

Module 11 asks you to record temperament for exactly this reason. An animal that endangers your family at every handling is not paying for itself, whatever its calf weighs.

16. An animal stops dead at the race entrance. What is the best first response?

Cattle baulk at sudden movement, noise and changes in light and shadow. Pushing harder fights the animal; removing the distraction fixes the cause.

17. Why does this course give no flight-zone distance in metres?

Confident numbers circulate elsewhere but none could be verified for this course. The handling principle - keep the approach calm, well-lit and free of distractions - works without a number.

18. Which of these makes cattle less willing to enter a race?

Cattle move more willingly from light into light than from light into a dark hole. A shadowed entrance is one of the most common causes of baulking.

19. Why should handling jobs be grouped into fewer days?

Group the flexible jobs around the events whose timing biology fixes - such as pregnancy testing at the end of the breeding season - so animals pass through once rather than many times.

20. What is often the most valuable output of a handling day?

Separating the open cows as they leave the crush gives you a culling shortlist at the only moment when separating them is easy, and the recorded data drives every later decision.

21. What is the single biggest factor in how much pain and setback castration causes?

The documented evidence puts age ahead of method: minimal cortisol elevation under one week old, and markedly higher pain scores at 42 days than at 6 or 21 days.

22. What is surprising about the rubber ring method?

Banding looks least dramatic to a watching farmer, which is precisely why its long documented aftermath matters. Surgery is more acute but has no prolonged aftermath if done cleanly.

23. Why is late castration a commercial problem, not only a welfare one?

Weaning weight multiplied by calves weaned is the herd's entire physical output. A calf fighting inflammation for a fortnight is a calf not gaining weight.

24. What is the honest limitation of the castration evidence in this lesson?

The biological mechanism has no obvious reason to differ by region, but the specific day-counts should be treated as sourced to that literature rather than as African field measurements.

25. Why does hygiene matter for all three castration methods?

Surgery makes an open wound, the Burdizzo crushes tissue and the band kills tissue. The same equipment-hygiene principle applies to dehorning, branding and ear tagging.

Module 10 capstone

Design and cost a handling facility for your own herd, then plan one handling day around it. Step 1: count your cattle by class - mature cows, growing stock, calves, and any bulls - and write down the largest animal you have to handle and roughly how wide and tall it is. Step 2: pace out the site where a crush and race could go, and note which way the ground slopes and where rainwater runs. Step 3: draw the layout on one page: holding pen, forcing pen, race, crush, and the gate where animals leave. Use 2.3 square metres per mature cow for the holding pen and 1.67 square metres per mature cow for the forcing pen, and size the race to at least two cow-lengths. Step 4: mark on your drawing, in a different colour, where a person will stand at every stage and where that person's escape route is. If any position has no escape route, redesign it now, on paper, not later with an animal in the race. Step 5: get local prices this month for the poles, timber, cable or steel you would need, and write a total. Step 6: write out a single handling day plan that groups every job needing a crush - dosing, vaccination, pregnancy testing, weighing or girth-taping, ear tagging - so animals pass through once, not five times. Step 7: name the people who will be present, and confirm that nobody is expected to work the herd alone.
