Every decision this course has taught - which cow to cull, which calf is growing, which animal was dosed last month - depends on being able to tell one animal from another, reliably, over years. This module covers how cattle are identified, what a beef producer must record, and a notebook system that costs nothing. It ends with the short list of numbers a farmer should be able to state about their own cattle without looking anything up, because a farmer who cannot state them is negotiating and culling blind.

A Herd You Cannot Tell Apart Cannot Be Managed

Almost every farmer says they know their cattle. Most do, in a way. You know the big red cow with the torn ear, you know which one always leads to water, you know the one that kicks. That is real knowledge and it is worth something. But it is not a record, and this lesson is about the difference.

Go back over what this course has already asked you to do. Cull the cow that fails to produce. Track weaning weight, because weaning weight multiplied by calves weaned is the entire physical output of the breeding herd. Know which animal has already been dosed or dipped and which has not. Know which cow was open at the end of the breeding season. Know whether your calving percentage went up or down this year.

Every one of those decisions is about one specific animal, measured against her own history, over several years. Not about the herd in general. And that is where memory fails, because memory works on the day and dissolves over seasons. Ask yourself honestly: which of your cows calved in each of the last four years? Most people cannot answer that even about a herd of twelve.

So the reference this course is built on states it plainly. A herd where every animal looks the same to the record-keeper is a herd that cannot be culled, bred, or costed with any precision. It can only be guessed at.

Here is the practical shape of the problem. Suppose you know your calving rate was 55 percent last season. That is a useful fact. It tells you a bit less than half your cows earned nothing that year. But it does not tell you a single thing you can act on, because it does not name a cow. Now suppose your notebook says cow 042 has calved every year for four years, and cow 019 has calved once in four years. That is an actionable fact. It tells you exactly which animal to sell and exactly which line of breeding to keep. The first fact is blunt; the second changes what you do next week.

That gap between a blunt herd fact and an actionable animal fact is the whole reason this module exists.

Think about what individual identification actually unlocks:

  • Culling on evidence. Without records, culling degenerates into removing the oldest-looking or thinnest animal, which is very often not the animal that is actually failing to produce.
  • Breeding decisions. You cannot keep the daughters of your best cows if you do not know whose daughters they are.
  • Weaning weight tracking. A weight written against no name is not data.
  • Dosing and dipping. Knowing an animal has already been treated, and with what, matters more now than it ever did, because resistance to both dewormers and tick chemicals is a documented and worsening problem across Africa.
  • Costing. The gross margin per cow calculation in the next module needs a per-cow revenue figure, and there is no per-cow anything without a per-cow identity.
  • Marketing. Knowing an animal's own production history is one of the four points at which this course says smallholder sellers lose value.

Now the good news, and it is genuinely good. A record system does not need to be sophisticated to be useful. A simple notebook with one line per animal, updated at each handling event - calving, weaning, dosing, sale, death - captures everything you need. It is the single cheapest productivity investment a herd owner can make, requiring no capital at all beyond the notebook itself.

Compare that with everything else this course has asked you to consider spending money on: a second bull, a crush, dry-season feed, a borehole. The notebook is the only one that costs almost nothing and improves every other decision you make.

One honest gap to state at the start. No sourced African culling-rate or culling-criteria benchmark figure was available for this course. So this module will not tell you that a well-run herd culls some fixed percentage of cows each year. What it will do is teach you to record enough that you can see, on paper, which of your own animals are not paying, and let that number be whatever your own herd says it is.

Ear Tags, Hot Irons and Freeze Brands

There are three common ways to put a permanent number on an animal, and each has a right way and a wrong way. The figures here come from a South African beef extension guideline on cattle identification.

Ear tags first, because they are what most smallholders will use.

Placement matters. The tag goes between the lower and middle cartilaginous ridge of the ear - the ridges you can feel with your fingers - and halfway between where the ear attaches to the head and the outer edge of the ear. That position puts the tag through a part of the ear with enough support to carry it, and far enough from the edge that it does not tear out.

Plastic tags are the commonest type and they have a known weakness: they fall out and they become illegible. Sun, dust and rubbing wear the writing away, and thorn scrub pulls them out. That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to check them. Build a tag check into every handling day: read every number, and re-tag any animal whose tag is gone or unreadable while she is still in the crush. A herd where a quarter of the tags have gone missing is a herd that has quietly stopped having records.

Metal tags are applied nearer the outer edge of the ear, close to the head, and here there is a specific health warning. Leave enough clearance for the ear to keep growing. A tag applied too tightly collects ticks against the ear and causes an abscess at the tag site. That is a genuine, avoidable injury, and it is worth remembering that this course has already told you ticks are the defining animal-health problem of African cattle. Do not build a tick trap into a calf's ear.

Now hot-iron branding, which is permanent in a way a tag is not.

The iron is applied for 3 to 5 seconds, depending on how hot it is. Correctly done, the hair at the brand site turns the colour of brown shoe polish and the skin is not broken. Learn that description, because it is the whole quality standard in one phrase. Not black, not raw, not bleeding. Brown shoe polish, skin intact.

Two preparation points. The animal should be dry and the site reasonably clean before you brand, or you get a smudged, illegible mark - and an illegible brand is not identification, it is just a scar.

And a design point that most people have never been told. Letters with enclosed loops - A, B, D, O, P, Q and R - should be designed with an opening in the loop. A fully closed loop traps heat and skin tissue inside it and causes unnecessary skin damage. If your brand design contains any of those seven letters, break the loop.

Freeze branding is the third method. It uses liquid nitrogen, or dry ice with methylated spirit, applied for 28 to 60 seconds after clipping the hair as short as possible at the site. The timing decides the result. A shorter application depigments the hair only, so the hair regrows white - which produces a clearly readable white brand on a dark-coated animal without permanently damaging the follicle. A longer application destroys the hair follicle itself and produces a bare, hairless mark. Both are legible; you are choosing between a white mark and a bald one, and on a light-coloured animal only the bald one shows.

One principle covers all three methods, and it comes from the same place as the castration hygiene rule in the last module. Tagging and branding create a wound or a wound-equivalent. Clean your equipment between animals, and think about what is in your soil - anthrax and tetanus are real in many areas - before you make a hole in a calf's ear and turn her back out into the kraal.

Finally, the part this course cannot decide for you. Branding is not only a management tool. A permanent, visible mark also serves as proof of ownership and as a defence against theft. In many countries, brand registration is a formal legal matter: a registered brand is legal proof of ownership, and the rules on brand design, registration, which animals must be marked and what a movement permit requires differ from country to country. This course gives you no brand-registration rule and no movement-permit rule as if it were yours. Go and ask the authority that registers brands and issues stock movement permits where you live - usually a national or provincial veterinary or livestock authority, or the local police stock theft unit - and find out what is required of you before you design a brand.

What a Beef Producer Must Actually Record

This lesson gives you the list. It is short, and it comes from a South African beef extension guideline on cattle identification and records. Seven categories, each one attached to a decision you have already been taught to make.

1. Individual animal identity. The tag or brand number itself. This is not a record on its own - it is the hook that every other record hangs on. Without it, all six of the others are floating loose.

2. Age. Or, where you genuinely do not know, the estimated age at the time you acquired the animal, clearly marked as an estimate. Age drives when a heifer should first calve, when a cow starts declining, and - as the next module shows - it is directly priced into graded carcass markets.

3. Calving status. Whether and when each cow last calved. This is the raw material of your calving percentage, which is the single most important number in this whole course. You cannot calculate it from an impression.

4. Pregnancy status. Determined at pregnancy testing, at the end of the breeding season. This is the raw material of your culling decision, because an open cow at the end of a defined breeding season is the clearest, most measurable culling candidate there is. She has already cost you a full year of grazing, water, dip and labour with nothing to show for it.

5. Weaning mass, post-weaning growth and final mass. Weaning weight multiplied by calves weaned is the herd's entire physical output. If you have no scale, the girth-tape method in the next module gives you an estimate good enough to track a trend. Record the estimate and mark it as an estimate.

6. Carcass grade, where you sell into a graded abattoir system. This is your feedback loop. It is the only way to find out, after the fact, whether the breeding and management choices you made two years ago actually produced an animal the market rewards. Most smallholders will not have this, and that is fine - but where it exists, it is free information and most people throw it away.

7. Temperament. This one surprises people, and it is on the sourced list. The last module explained why: cattle, and especially bulls, cause regular injuries and deaths to handlers. A documented history of aggressive or difficult behaviour is a legitimate culling criterion sitting alongside pure productivity. An animal that endangers your family at every handling is not paying for itself, whatever her calf weighs. Write it down in the moment - a note like "struck at handler, second time" - because in six months you will remember that she was difficult but not that it was the second time.

Now one structural point that the list alone does not make obvious, and it matters.

Record calving and weaning as two separate events, not as one.

Here is why. A calf can be born alive and still be lost before weaning - to disease, predation, starvation from a poor-milking or dead dam, or misadventure. The Tuli data in this course gives a rare, directly measured split of exactly this: pre-natal calf wastage of 6 percent and post-natal calf wastage of 1.5 percent in that breed, against an overall breed mortality across all ages of 7 percent, compared with Afrikaner at 8 percent and Tswana at 12 percent.

Those two wastage figures point at completely different causes. Loss before birth points toward cow nutrition, disease and bull fertility. Loss after birth points toward calving difficulty, mothering ability, milk supply, predation, and calf-specific disease and parasite exposure. Those are different problems with different fixes.

A record system that only counts calves weaned against cows exposed cannot tell them apart. It gives you one number and no direction. Two separate events - she calved on this date, the calf weaned or died on that date - gives you a diagnosis.

One more note on the Tuli figures. They come from a documented breed comparison, and they are the lowest wastage figures in that comparison. Do not treat 6 percent and 1.5 percent as targets you have failed to hit. Treat them as proof that the two losses are separate things worth counting separately, and then count your own.

Write these seven categories on the inside cover of your notebook. That is your record system's specification, and it fits on one page.

The Notebook: One Page Per Animal, One Line Per Event

In this lesson

Now we build the actual book. The structure below is a teaching template, put together from the sourced record categories in the last lesson. It is a suggested minimal structure, not itself a sourced standard, and you should adapt it to how you work.

It has two parts.

Part one is the identity card. One per animal, made once, when the animal is first identified. Six fields:

  • ID, the tag or brand number. For example, 042.
  • Sex.
  • Dam ID, her mother's number, if you know it.
  • Sire, the bull used, if known. Write "Bull 3" if he has a number, or the breed and source if he was never individually tagged.
  • Date of birth, or estimated age at acquisition, clearly marked as an estimate.
  • Breed or type. For example, Tuli-cross.

That is the animal's permanent identity. It never changes.

Part two is the event log. One row per animal per year, updated at each handling event. Five columns: date, event, detail, weight or estimate, note. The events to log are:

  1. Bull in, or mating start. Which bull, which cows. This is the entry that defines your breeding season.
  2. Calved, or did not calve. Live calf, stillbirth, or open. Note the dam's condition. This feeds your calving percentage and your culling decision.
  3. Dosed, with a dewormer or acaricide. Record the product and the dose band used, with the girth-tape estimate you dosed to. This feeds your resistance management, because rotating classes only works if you know what you used last time.
  4. Vaccinated. Which disease or diseases.
  5. Weaned. With weaning weight or estimate. This is the core output number.
  6. Sold, culled or died. With the buyer and price basis, or the cause of death, and the final weight.

Six event types. Five columns. That is the whole system.

Now the part that decides whether it works, and it is not the design of the book. It is where and when you write in it.

Records are either written at the crush, in the moment, or written from memory in the evening. Memory is where records go to die. By evening you will remember four of the fourteen cows you tested and you will be confident about all of them. The previous module asked you to build a shelf or board at the working position, somewhere dry to stand and write. That is the record system's most important physical component.

So plan the handling day around the book. One person works the crush and one person writes. The writer reads the tag number aloud, the handler confirms it, and the entry is made before the animal leaves. If a tag is unreadable, the animal is re-tagged there and then and the new number is written against the old one on her identity card, so the history is not broken.

And this is why the last module told you to group jobs into one handling day. Every job that needs an animal restrained - pregnancy testing, dosing, vaccination, girth-taping, tag reading - produces a record. Doing them together means one visit to the book per animal per event, instead of five scattered half-remembered ones.

Finally, why this structure and not something simpler.

A plain yearly tally - "we had 20 cows and 11 calves" - is not worthless. It gives you a calving percentage for that year. But it tells you nothing about which cow produced them. And which cow is precisely what the culling decision needs, and precisely what the gross margin per cow calculation in the next module needs.

That is the difference between knowing that the herd's calving rate is 55 percent - a useful but blunt fact - and knowing that cow 042 has calved every year for four years while cow 019 has calved once in four. The second is the one that actually changes what you do next.

One last practical instruction. Write the date the book started on the first page. Everything before that date is memory and estimate, and everything after it is record. Be honest about the line between the two, mark your estimates as estimates, and in three years you will have something no amount of money can buy back: your own herd's real history.

The Numbers You Should Be Able to State Without Looking

This lesson is a test. There is a short list of numbers a person who owns cattle as a business should be able to state about their own herd, standing in a field, without opening a book. If you cannot state them, you do not yet know your own business - and that is fixable, which is the point of everything in this module.

Start with the equation this whole course is built on. Learn it word for word:

Total kilograms weaned per year equals the number of cows exposed to the bull, multiplied by the calving percentage, multiplied by the calf survival rate to weaning, multiplied by the average weaning weight per surviving calf.

Four terms. Every one of them is a number about your own herd. Every one of them is something you can raise. And because they multiply rather than add, a weak term drags down everything else - which is exactly why a herd that is large in cow numbers but weak in any one term can produce less usable output than a smaller, tightly managed herd.

So here are the numbers to know.

One. How many cows you exposed to the bull last season. Not how many cattle you own. Cows exposed. That means breeding females that had a real chance to conceive, and it excludes heifers too young to breed, calves, and steers.

Two. How many of them calved. From that, your calving percentage: calves born divided by cows exposed, times 100.

Three. How many calves survived to weaning. From that, your calf survival rate, and separately your split of losses before and after birth.

Four. The average weight, or girth-tape estimate, of the calves you weaned.

Five. How many cows you own that have not weaned a calf in two years.

Now let us do the arithmetic honestly, because the third number is where most people flinch.

A herd of 20 cows at a 40 percent calving rate weans 8 calves in a year. The same 20 cows at a 70 percent calving rate wean 14. The land, labour, bull, dip and water bill for those 20 cows is very nearly identical either way.

That 40 percent figure is not invented to shame anyone. A review of the evidence summarised the continental picture as roughly six in ten cows in Africa failing to produce a calf in a given year - about a 40 percent average calving rate across communal African cattle-keeping. Country data cited in the same review: a South African comparison of 61 percent in the commercial sector against 23 percent in the communal sector, commercial herds calving roughly 2.7 times as often per cow per year; one Venda communal survey as low as 15 percent; a southern Ethiopia dataset averaging 55 percent with a range from 12 to 83 percent; Zambian data from 44 to 80 percent; and a 12-year Zimbabwean dataset from Mazvihwa running 68 to 82 percent.

Be careful how you use those figures. They were reported in a farming-press review summarising several underlying studies, and the individual primary papers were not separately obtained. So treat the country-level percentages as that review's own citations, not as fixed laws. What is solid, and consistent across every figure available, is the qualitative conclusion: there is a large, persistent, well-documented gap between communal and commercial calving rates across multiple African countries.

The useful thing about the range - 15 percent at the bottom, 83 percent at the top - is that it tells you the ceiling is not close. Whatever your own figure is, somebody in an African herd is running well above it.

And 70 percent is not a fantasy. It sits inside the documented range, below the top of the Zimbabwean and Ethiopian datasets and just above the South African commercial figure of 61 percent. It is a realistic, evidence-based improvement target, not a promise.

One caution on comparing your figure with anyone else's. Different studies define their terms differently. This course's breed section shows exactly this trap: Tuli is reported with a reproductive rate of 85 percent in one source and a calving rate of 69 percent in another, from different herds, years and probably different definitions. They must not be averaged and they are not the same measurement. So when someone tells you their herd runs at 80 percent, ask what they are counting: cows conceived, calves born, or calves weaned. Those are three different numbers.

Count your own the same way every year. Consistency with yourself matters more than comparison with anyone else.

Turning Records Into Decisions

A record you never act on is a diary. This lesson is about the moment the notebook changes what you do, and that moment is almost always a culling decision.

Start with the principle. A cow that fails to produce a calf, that loses a calf, or that weans a consistently light calf year after year is occupying a place in the herd that could go to a cow that produces reliably. She eats the same grass. She drinks the same water. She costs the same dip, the same dose and the same labour. She occupies grazing capacity that a productive animal could use. What she does not do is produce anything.

That is the herd-level version of the arithmetic this whole course has been building. Culling discipline is how you put it into practice.

Here are the culling priorities this course can support, in order.

First priority: an open cow at the end of a defined breeding season. She is the clearest and most measurable candidate there is. She has already cost you a full year with no output, and the year is over - nothing you do now recovers it. Note the two conditions built into that sentence. Her open status can only be known if you have defined a breeding season and if you pregnancy test at its end. A bull running with the herd all year makes this decision impossible, because there is no moment at which "open" means anything.

Second priority: a cow that has lost two calves - to death, poor mothering, or repeated failure to conceive - in a documented record. Note the word documented, and note that it is two, not one. A single bad year has many innocent causes: a drought, a disease outbreak, or the bull's own subfertility, which is not her fault at all and would be repeated across the whole herd. A record spanning several years is what distinguishes a cow with a bad year from a cow with a bad record. This is precisely the discrimination that memory cannot make and a notebook can.

Third priority: old age combined with declining body condition, or unsound teeth, udder or legs. Here there is a useful, low-cost check available to anyone. The mouth. A cow's ability to keep grazing effectively depends on her teeth, and you can assess that with your hands and no equipment at all. The Boran breed society reports cows remaining sound-mouthed - retaining a functional set of teeth for grazing - for 15 years or more, with bulls fertile well past 10 years and one 16-year-old bull still producing usable semen. Read that carefully: it describes a well-managed pedigree herd, and an ordinary smallholder herd on harder forage should expect variation. It is not a promise that your cows will graze well at 15. It is a reason to check the mouth rather than assume a number.

And alongside all three, the temperament record from Lesson 3. A documented history of aggression is a legitimate culling criterion sitting beside productivity, not below it.

Now the discipline that makes this practical rather than theoretical.

The previous module described the single handling day at the end of a breeding season: pregnancy test every cow, record the result against her number, and draft the open cows into a separate pen as they leave the crush. That drafting step is where records become decisions. It costs nothing extra, it happens while the animals are already in hand, and separating those cows will never be easier than at that moment. What comes out of that pen is your culling shortlist. You then check each one against her recorded history before selling, because an otherwise excellent cow with three good years and one open year is a different case from a cow with three open years.

One honest limit. This course cannot tell you what proportion of your herd to cull each year, because no sourced African culling-rate or culling-criteria benchmark was available. Anyone quoting you a fixed percentage is quoting something this course could not verify. What your records give you instead is better than a benchmark: a named list of your own animals, ranked by their own measured performance, which is the only list you can actually act on.

And remember what culling is for. It is not punishment and it is not a sign of failure. Every non-payer you remove releases grazing, water, dip and labour for an animal that pays. That is the same herd, the same land, and more output - which is exactly the argument the final module of this course is about to make with money attached.

1. Why is knowing your cattle by sight not the same as having records?

Culling, breeding and weaning-weight decisions all measure one animal against several years of her own record. Very few people can say which cows calved in each of the last four years.

2. Which statement is actionable?

Only the third names an animal. The herd rate is a useful fact but it does not tell you which cow to sell, which is the only form of the advice a farmer can act on.

3. What happens to culling when there are no individual records?

Appearance and productivity are not the same thing. A thin cow may have just weaned a heavy calf; a well-covered cow may have produced nothing for two years.

4. Why does dosing history matter more now than in the past?

Resistance management depends on treating when there is a reason and rotating drug classes, and neither is possible without a written record of what each animal received and when.

5. Why does this course give no target culling percentage?

The gap is stated plainly rather than filled with a plausible number. Your own records will give you your own herd's figure, which is the one that matters.

6. Where should an ear tag be placed?

That position has enough cartilage support to carry the tag and is far enough from the edge that the tag does not tear out.

7. What is the specific risk of applying a metal tag too tightly?

Metal tags go near the outer edge close to the head, and enough clearance must be left for the ear to keep growing. A tight tag becomes a tick trap and an injury.

8. What does a correctly applied hot-iron brand look like?

3 to 5 seconds depending on iron temperature gives that result. Anything that breaks the skin has been applied too long or too hot.

9. Why should letters like A, B, D, O, P, Q and R be designed with an opening in the loop?

The trapped tissue inside a closed loop takes far more heat than the outline itself needs, and the damage is entirely avoidable by breaking the loop in the design.

10. What difference does freeze-brand application time make?

The range is 28 to 60 seconds after clipping. On a light-coated animal a white-hair brand will not show, so the choice of duration is a practical one.

11. Why must calving and weaning be recorded as two separate events?

Pre-natal loss points toward cow nutrition, disease and bull fertility; post-natal loss points toward calving difficulty, mothering, milk supply, predation and calf disease. One combined number gives no direction.

12. Which record is the raw material of the culling decision?

13. Why is temperament on the sourced record list?

It sits alongside productivity criteria. An animal that endangers your family at every handling is not paying for itself, whatever her calf weighs.

14. What is carcass grade useful for on a farm record?

Where you sell into a graded system, the grade is free information about decisions you made two years earlier. Most smallholders who receive it never write it down.

15. How should the Tuli figures of 6 percent pre-natal and 1.5 percent post-natal wastage be used?

They are the lowest figures in one documented breed comparison, from one dataset. Their teaching value is structural, not as a benchmark you have failed.

16. What are the two parts of the record system in this lesson?

The identity card is made once and never changes; the event log records what happens to that animal, hanging every entry on the ID number.

17. Why must records be written at the crush rather than in the evening?

The previous module asked for a dry place to stand and write at the working position for exactly this reason. It is the record system's most important physical component.

18. Why record the product and dose band used when dosing?

Rotating drug classes is one of the standard resistance-management principles, and rotation is impossible without a written record of the previous treatment.

19. What can a yearly tally of calves born NOT tell you?

Which cow is exactly what the culling decision and the gross margin per cow calculation both require, so a tally stops one step short of being actionable.

20. Why write the date the record book started on the first page?

Everything before that date is reconstruction. Marking estimates as estimates means that in three years you will not mistake a guess for a measurement.

21. What is the core output equation of a beef breeding herd?

The four terms multiply, so a weak term in any one of them drags the whole result down - which is why a large herd can produce less than a smaller, tightly managed one.

22. A herd of 20 cows at a 70 percent calving rate weans how many calves?

20 multiplied by 0.70 is 14, against 8 at a 40 percent rate - with essentially the same land, labour, bull, dip and water bill either way.

23. How should the country-level calving percentages in this lesson be treated?

They were reported in a farming-press review summarising several underlying studies whose primary papers were not separately obtained. The qualitative gap is consistent across every figure available.

24. Why must you ask what someone is counting when they quote a rate?

This course's own breed data shows the trap: Tuli appears with a reproductive rate of 85 percent in one source and a calving rate of 69 percent in another. They are not the same measurement and must not be averaged.

25. Which animals count in "cows exposed to the bull"?

Heifers too young to breed, calves and steers are excluded. Counting them would flatter your calving percentage and hide the real problem.

26. Which cow is the clearest culling candidate?

Her open status is measurable and she has already cost a full year with no output. But it can only be known if a breeding season is defined and pregnancy is tested at its end.

27. Why is two lost calves a stronger culling case than one?

A documented record spanning several years distinguishes a cow with a bad year from a cow with a bad record - a discrimination memory cannot make and a notebook can.

29. When is the easiest moment to separate culling candidates?

The animals are already in hand, the result is already known, and it costs nothing extra. Separating them will never be easier than at that moment.

30. What is the purpose of culling in this course's argument?

Every non-payer removed frees the exact inputs a productive cow needs. That is the same herd and the same land producing more, which is the whole economic argument.

Module 11 capstone

Build a working herd register for your own cattle, from nothing, in one week. Step 1: walk your herd and count it properly - cows, heifers, calves at foot, weaners, bulls, oxen - and write the count down. Step 2: give every animal that does not already have one a unique number, and write that number where it will still be readable in three years: an ear tag placed between the lower and middle cartilaginous ridge of the ear, halfway between where the ear joins the head and the outer edge, or a brand. Step 3: open a notebook and make one page per animal with six lines on it: ID, sex, dam's number if known, sire or bull used, date or estimated year of birth, and breed or type. Step 4: on the back of each page, rule an event log with five columns - date, event, detail, weight or girth-tape estimate, note. Step 5: fill in what you know from memory today, marking clearly which entries are estimates, so that next year you do not mistake a guess for a record. Step 6: write today's date at the top of the book. From this date your records are real. Step 7: decide where the book lives - somewhere dry at the crush, not in your head - and who writes in it on a handling day. Step 8: from your new register, calculate last season's calving percentage and name the cows that did not calve.
