The Dot Families

Twenty-eight Arabic letters are built from far fewer shapes, and dots do most of the distinguishing work.

Five shapes, thirteen letters. In each family the skeleton is identical and only the dots move.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Draw the boat shape and make all three of ب ت ث by moving the dots: one below, two above, three above.
  2. Draw the hook shape and make ج ح خ: dot inside for j, no dot for ḥ, dot above for kh. The sounds are very different but the skeleton is one shape.
  3. Draw the small hook for د and ذ, and the curve for ر and ز. In each pair, adding one dot above changes the sound.
  4. Draw the three-tooth shape for س and add three dots above for ش.
  5. Write all thirteen letters on your wall grouped in their families, with the family skeleton drawn once at the head of each row. Leave the chart up.
  6. Explain your chart out loud to one person, family by family.

💡 Why it works

Grouping by skeleton means you learn five shapes instead of thirteen letters, and the dots become a small separate thing to remember rather than part of a new shape each time. This is one of the genuinely efficient routes into the Arabic alphabet.

🔥 Challenge

Draw a skeleton with no dots and have a friend add dots to make the letter you name. Ten rounds.
