Six Letters That Refuse to Hold Hands

Arabic letters join to both sides — except six, which join only on the right, and those six are why words look like they have gaps.

ا د ذ ر ز و ✋ | مدرسة vs دار
These six take a hand from the right but never give one to the left. That is what creates the breaks inside a word.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Write the six non-connectors big on one card: ا د ذ ر ز و. Say aloud: these six never join to the left.
  2. Cut strips and build دار — dār — house — letter by letter, right to left. Notice د will not attach to the ا that follows it, so there is a visible gap.
  3. Now build نور — nūr — light. The ن joins forward to the و, but the و stops dead and will not join the ر.
  4. Copy all five words of this module by hand, joined, right to left, and circle every gap caused by a non-connector.
  5. Write the six non-connectors on a card and stick it above where you write. You will check it constantly for a fortnight and then never again.
  6. Read all five words aloud to somebody, pointing right to left and naming each gap you circled.

💡 Why it works

Gaps inside Arabic words confuse beginners badly, because they look like spaces between words. Knowing there are exactly six culprits turns an apparently chaotic feature into a short closed list, and reading speed jumps immediately.
