Prices in the Souq

Market Arabic is short, direct and identical from Nouakchott to Omdurman, and it is the fastest useful Arabic you can own.

بكم؟ 💰 غالي 😤 رخيص 🙂
How much? Expensive. Cheap. Three words and you can bargain.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Write each of the five words on a card, Arabic on the front, transliteration and meaning on the back.
  2. Learn بكم — bikam — 'how much?' — as a single sound. Say it twenty times.
  3. Set up a market. Your friend lays out five objects and names a price. You point at one and ask بكم؟
  4. Reply with either غالي — ghālī — too expensive — or خذ — no, keep it simple — say طيب — ṭayyib — 'alright, good' — and take the item.
  5. Swap roles and run the whole game again with silly prices so you use غالي often.
  6. Write the full exchange out in joined Arabic on cardboard and hang it up.

💡 Why it works

Bargaining vocabulary is produced under mild social pressure, which is exactly the condition that makes language stick. It is also genuinely the first Arabic you will use if you ever travel north, so it earns its place ahead of prettier vocabulary.

🔥 Challenge

Run the market game with someone who does not speak Arabic and teach them their lines as you go.
