One Root, Five Words

The three consonants k-t-b carry the idea of writing, and pouring them into different patterns produces an entire family of related words.

ك ت ب → كتب · كتاب · مكتب · مكتبة · كاتب
Look at each word and find the same three letters in the same order. They are always there.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Write the three root letters ك ت ب at the top of your paper. These three carry the meaning 'writing'.
  2. Now write each of the five words below it, joined, and circle the ك, the ت and the ب inside every single one. They never move out of order.
  3. Listen to all five on the phone and repeat each five times. Notice how the vowels between the root letters change while the consonants never do.
  4. Look at the meanings: he wrote, book, office, library, writer. Every one is a different angle on the same idea.
  5. Now predict. If م at the front often makes a place, and مكتب is an office, what would you guess مكتبة is? Check whether you were right.
  6. Show your circled diagram to one person and explain the root system to them out loud.

💡 Why it works

The three-consonant root is the actual engine of Arabic, and seeing it once with your own pen through five real words explains more about the language than months of word lists. From here, new vocabulary arrives attached to words you already know rather than as separate items.
