Chinese one, two and three. You already knew how to write them before you started.

🎒 What you need

a cereal box or any stiff card
scissors or a sharp edge
a charcoal stick, pen or chalk

✋ Do this

Cut your cereal box into ten cards, about the size of your palm.
On the front of each card write one number character: 一二三四五六七八九十. On the back write the Pinyin: yī èr sān sì wǔ liù qī bā jiǔ shí.
Shuffle your cards. Lay them face-down and turn them over one at a time, saying the number aloud before you check the back.
Go outside and count real things in Chinese. Goats. Mangoes on a tree. Bricks in a wall. Say the number out loud each time: yī, èr, sān, sì...
Line the ten cards up in order on the ground and photograph them in your head — or show them to your family and count all the way to shí without looking at the backs.
Keep the cards. You will use them again in module 6.

💡 Why it works

Making the flashcards yourself is half the learning — your hand has already written each character before you ever test yourself. And counting real goats instead of counting on a page means the number and the thing arrive in your memory together.

Count a herd of goats in Chinese out loud while someone else counts them in your own language. Who finishes first?
