๐ What you need
- the shared phone with a free flight simulator in the browser or as an app
- twenty uninterrupted minutes and a stable surface
- paper to record times and mistakes
โ Do this
- Hover only, for two full minutes, without drifting more than a body-width. Time it. Most people cannot do it first try.
- Practise climb and descend while holding position. Note that descending is harder โ the craft settles into its own disturbed air.
- Fly a box pattern nose-forward, turning at each corner so the nose always leads. Log your time.
- Now fly the same box with the nose locked toward you the entire time. Your left and right are now reversed. This is the single skill that separates pilots from crashers.
- Practise a deliberate emergency: kill throttle, then recover before impact. Do it ten times. It costs nothing here and it costs everything in real life.
- Finally, fly a straight survey line at constant height and constant speed, twice. Compare your two runs โ consistency, not flair, is what mapping needs.
๐ก Why it works
Reversed controls when the aircraft faces you cause a large share of beginner crashes, and simulator hours are the standard, cheap fix used by professionals worldwide. The constant-height, constant-speed line you practised last is the actual working skill for aerial survey, where a wobbling flight path ruins the photo overlap and the map with it.
