Airspace, Law and Responsibility

Flying legally is a professional skill, and in most countries flying illegally is a criminal matter, not a telling-off.

๐ŸŽ’ What you need

โœ‹ Do this

  1. Find your own country's civil aviation authority website and locate its drone or RPAS page. Do not rely on anything you were told secondhand, including this course โ€” check the source.
  2. Write down the answers to five questions: must the drone be registered, must the operator be licensed or permitted, what is the maximum height allowed, how far must you stay from an airport, and is flying over people allowed.
  3. Note the pattern you will find across many African countries โ€” Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa and others require registration and prior authorisation, with penalties for flying without it, and rules differ enough between countries that you must always check locally.
  4. Learn the two universals: never fly near an airport or approach path, and always keep the aircraft in your direct line of sight.
  5. Now the human side. Write down who you would need to ask before flying over a neighbour's compound, a market, a school or a funeral โ€” and what you would say to them.
  6. Build a pre-flight checklist of ten items covering aircraft, battery, weather, people and permission. Sign and date it. That is what a professional operator actually carries.

๐Ÿ’ก Why it works

Drones do genuinely valuable work across Africa โ€” delivering blood and medical supplies to hard-to-reach clinics, surveying farmland, and assessing damage after floods โ€” and that work exists only because operators are trusted and regulated. Regulators respond to incidents, so a single reckless flight near an airport affects the rules for everyone. Knowing the law is not bureaucracy; it is the price of being allowed to do the interesting work.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Challenge

Write a one-page permission request to a real landowner for a real survey: what you will fly, when, over what, what you will do with the images, and how you will protect their privacy. Show it to an adult and take their criticism seriously.
