Counting Mangoes to Ten

Ten Russian numbers, learned as a chant, will carry you through prices, ages, dates and phone numbers for the rest of your life.

1 один · 2 два · 3 три · 4 четыре · 5 пять
три really does mean three. Some words travelled a very long way and barely changed.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Listen to the numbers one to ten straight through, twice, without repeating.
  2. Now repeat after the audio, laying down one stone for each number as you say it.
  3. Notice три — tri — three. It sounds like 'three' because both words come from the same ancient root. So does два — dva — two.
  4. Cover the screen and count your ten stones out loud from memory. If you stumble, uncover and fix just that number.
  5. Count real things all day: mangoes, goats, chairs, people on a bench. Out loud, in Russian.
  6. Show a family member your ten stones and count them in Russian while they watch.

💡 Why it works

Numbers are the highest-value words in any language because you use them daily and can practise them on anything in sight. Laying down a stone per number turns the chant into something your hands remember as well as your mouth.

🔥 Challenge

Count to десять in Russian faster than your sibling can count to ten in English. Practise first — this is winnable.
