Read a Real Russian Word in the Wild

Cyrillic turns up on machinery, medicine boxes and signs — and now that you can read it, you cannot walk past it.

ВХОД ⬅️ in ВЫХОД ➡️ out
Two words that differ by one letter. Ы is the difference between coming in and going out.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Learn the five sign words first: вход, выход, стоп, открыто, закрыто. Read each one aloud letter by letter.
  2. Now go and look. Check generator plates, water pumps, welding gear, old tools, medicine packets and tyre markings for Cyrillic writing.
  3. Copy any Cyrillic you find onto your paper exactly as written, even if you have no idea what it says.
  4. Sound out every word you copied, letter by letter, out loud. You do not need to know the meaning — reading it is the win.
  5. Write вход and выход on two pieces of card and tape them to the correct sides of your door. Leave them up.
  6. Show one adult your signs and read them the difference between the two words.

💡 Why it works

Decoding writing that was never meant for a learner proves the alphabet is genuinely yours. And two words that differ by a single letter force you to read carefully rather than guessing from the shape — the exact habit that makes a fluent reader.

🔥 Challenge

Find one piece of Cyrillic writing somewhere near you that nobody else in your household can read. Then read it to them.
