молоко → written m-o-l-o-k-o → said ma-la-KÓ
🎒 What you need
- the shared phone, about 20 minutes
- headphones if possible
✋ Do this
- Listen to молоко five times without speaking. Write down where you hear the strongest syllable.
- Now say it the Russian way: ma-la-KÓ. Both unstressed o's soften towards a. Say it fifteen times.
- Do the same with хорошо — kha-ra-SHÓ — and Москва — ma-SKVÁ. Same rule, every time.
- Now do спасибо — spa-SÍ-ba. The stress is in the middle and the final o softens to a. Almost every learner says spa-si-BO and it is wrong.
- Record yourself saying all five words. Compare each against the model and mark which ones have the stress in the wrong place.
- Fix the worst one, re-record it, and only stop when the beat lands in the same place as the model.
💡 Why it works
Vowel reduction is a rule, not an accident, and once you know the rule you can pronounce new words correctly on sight as long as you know where the stress falls. Learners who never meet this rule keep a heavy foreign accent no matter how much vocabulary they add.
🔥 Challenge
Say spa-si-BO and spa-SI-ba to a friend and ask which sounds Russian. Then explain the rule to them.
