A calf is born with almost no defences of its own, and what happens in the first hour of her life shapes whether she survives, how much she costs you in treatment, and whether she ever joins the milking herd. This module covers colostrum timing and quantity, the measured illness difference between well-fed and poorly-fed calves, milk feeding and growth rates, why weaning is decided by the rumen and not the calendar, and why the calf is the co-product that makes calving interval worth chasing.

Born With No Defences

A calf is born with almost no circulating antibodies of its own. The cow's placenta does not pass significant immunity to the calf before birth. Whatever that calf has to fight disease in her first weeks of life must come from one place: colostrum, the antibody-rich first milk.

Stop and take that in properly, because it is not how most mammals work and it is not what most people assume. The calf does not arrive partly protected and then top up. She arrives with essentially nothing. On the day she is born she is defenceless, in a shed containing dung, flies, other animals and everything they carry, and her entire immune protection for the coming weeks is waiting in her mother's udder a metre away.

Now the second fact, which is the one that turns this into an urgent job rather than a routine one.

The calf's gut can absorb whole antibody molecules only for a short period after birth. Those antibodies are large. For a brief window the gut wall lets them pass through intact into her bloodstream. Then that window closes. Extension guidance states it plainly: with each minute that passes after birth, a calf's ability to absorb antibodies is reduced, and by 24 hours the gut is almost completely closed.

Read that first clause again. With each minute. Not each day, not each hour. This is not a deadline you meet or miss at the end of the day. It is a slope you are sliding down from the moment she is born, and every hour of delay takes real protection off her permanently.

After closure, colostrum is still good food. It is no longer immunity. The antibodies stay in the gut and are digested like any other protein instead of entering her blood. Feeding excellent colostrum at 30 hours is not a late success. It is a miss.

So how fast is fast enough? Here the honest answer involves two sourced figures that do not agree, and this course will show you both rather than pretending to a single clean number.

One veterinary source gives feeding within six hours of birth as the target for the first feed. Another gives within one hour as the ideal, and says that any calf that has not suckled naturally within one to two hours needs to be given colostrum by hand or by tube without further delay.

Those two timings genuinely differ and this document does not reconcile them. So the instruction you should follow is the conservative one: get colostrum into the calf as soon as possible, within the first one to two hours if at all achievable, and no later than six hours. Treat every additional hour of delay as a real, escalating loss of protection, because that is exactly what the gut closure mechanism says it is.

Notice how this changes what you do at a calving. If you plan to check the calf in the morning, you have already lost. If you plan to wait and see whether she suckles on her own, you must set a limit of one to two hours and be ready to intervene. That means being present, or at least checking within the hour, and it means having colostrum, a clean bucket or a feeding tube, and a plan, ready before the calving rather than assembled afterwards in the dark.

This is also why the reproduction module insisted you calculate the expected calving date the day pregnancy is confirmed. A calving you knew about three months ago is a calving you can be present at. A calving that surprises you is a calving where the first hour is spent finding out it happened.

One closing point on why this lesson opens the module. Almost everything else in dairy farming can be improved later. A poor month of feeding can be corrected next month. A missed heat comes round again in 21 days. Colostrum is different. The window opens at birth, closes within a day, and never reopens for that animal. There is no second chance and no corrective action. It is the single most consequential feeding decision in the calf's entire life, and it happens before most farmers have finished their morning.

How Much Colostrum, And How Good

The last lesson dealt with speed. This one deals with the other two variables you control: how much, and how good.

Quantity first, because it is where most calves are short-changed.

The sourced targets converge on roughly four litres, about one US gallon, of good-quality colostrum as the first-day total, with one source specifying this within the first six hours. Another describes at least one gallon, four litres, as delivering 200 to 300 grams of IgG, which is the antibody the calf needs. A minimum of three litres of high-quality colostrum, meaning IgG above 50 milligrams per millilitre, within six hours, is given as a lower bound.

Four litres is a lot more than most calves get when left to themselves in the first hours. A newborn suckling on her own in a corner of a shed, sometimes with a cow that will not stand still, sometimes with a teat she cannot find, frequently gets a fraction of that. This is exactly why hand-feeding or tube-feeding matters. It is not that a calf cannot suckle. It is that you cannot know how much she took, and the whole point of this lesson is a quantity.

Then the second feed. A further colostrum feed eight to twelve hours after the first is recommended in addition. And continued colostrum feeding, not plain milk yet, through roughly the calf's first three days is described in one source.

So the practical schedule looks like this. First feed as soon as possible after birth, ideally within one to two hours, no later than six, aiming for a first-day total of about four litres with a minimum of three litres of good colostrum within six hours. Second feed eight to twelve hours after the first. Then continued colostrum through roughly the first three days.

Now quality, which is the variable most farmers do not think about at all.

Not all colostrum is equal. Some cows produce thick, concentrated colostrum full of antibodies. Others produce a thin, watery version with far less in it, and a calf can drink four litres of that and still end up poorly protected. Volume alone does not guarantee protection.

Quality can be measured cheaply where the equipment exists. A Brix refractometer reading of 24 percent or higher is given as the threshold for colostrum considered good enough to feed as the first feed. Colostrum testing below that should be supplemented with a colostrum replacer product where one is available.

Be honest about that in a smallholder context. A locally validated Brix threshold, and the availability and cost of refractometers for African smallholders, could not be established for this course. So the 24 percent figure is given as the sourced measurement threshold, and whether a refractometer is obtainable or affordable where you are is a question you have to answer locally. If you are part of a cooperative or a dairy group, one shared refractometer across many members is a realistic idea worth raising, because it is a small instrument used for a few seconds per calving.

Where no refractometer is available, the general husbandry principle is that colostrum from a cow's first milking, thick and yellow rather than thin and watery, is of higher quality. Use that, but understand its limit clearly: it is a judgement by eye, not a measurement, and it is not a substitute for one.

A few practical points that turn all of this into action.

Milk the cow out properly at that first milking, rather than letting the calf take what she can and leaving the rest. You need to see how much there is and control how much goes in.

Keep it clean. Colostrum is being fed to an animal with no immune defences at all, through a gut that is deliberately open to whatever passes through. A dirty bucket at this moment is a route straight into her bloodstream.

And if the cow's own colostrum is poor, thin or insufficient, colostrum from another freshly calved cow in the herd is the usual fallback where one exists. Plan that before you need it, because at three in the morning with a weak calf is not the time to start thinking about it.

What Good Colostrum Management Is Worth

The last two lessons told you what to do. This one tells you what it is worth, because a practice you understand the value of is a practice you actually keep up at three in the morning.

Here is the sourced evidence, and it is one of the strongest pieces in this entire course.

Calves achieving a serum IgG level of 30 grams per litre or higher, which is described as excellent passive transfer, experienced over 10 percent less illness than calves whose serum IgG was only around 8 grams per litre.

Break that down. Serum IgG is the antibody level actually circulating in the calf's blood after she has absorbed colostrum. It is the measure of whether colostrum management worked. Passive transfer is the technical name for antibodies passing from the dam to the calf through colostrum, and excellent passive transfer means it went well.

So the sentence says: calves that got colostrum right were measurably, substantially less sick than calves that did not. Not a theory, not an opinion. A measured difference in illness, driven by a management decision that costs nothing.

That last point is what makes this the highest-return practice in the whole enterprise, and it deserves saying plainly.

Colostrum is free. It is the cow's own milk. It is already there, in the udder, at the moment it is needed. It cannot be sold as market milk in any case, and it is not sold as milk in essentially any dairy system. You are not buying anything, choosing between anything, or spending anything. The only inputs are attention, a clean container and being awake.

And the failure mode is measurably worse for the calf. That is the shape of a decision that should never be got wrong: no cost on one side, real measured harm on the other.

Now work out the cost of the harm on your own farm, because the percentages become real when you put your own numbers to them.

A calf that gets sick costs you in four ways.

Treatment. Whatever the medicine and the visit cost you where you live. This is the only one most farmers count.

Growth. A sick calf stops growing while she is ill and often does not fully catch up. In a dairy heifer, slower growth means a later age at first calving, and every month of delay is a month of feeding an animal that produces nothing.

Your time. Time spent nursing a sick calf is time not spent on everything else, and on a smallholding labour is genuinely scarce.

And the worst one: the animal itself. A calf that dies deletes the entire investment. Every day of gestation her mother carried her, every litre of milk fed to her, and, if she was a heifer, her whole future lactation life. That is the loss that makes all the others look small.

So do this arithmetic once, honestly, for your own farm. What would you pay to replace a heifer calf? What does a veterinary visit and a course of treatment cost you locally? Prices differ everywhere and this course will not invent them for you, but you know yours. Write both numbers down. Now weigh them against four litres of milk you were never going to sell, given inside the first hours.

There is one more reason this matters that goes beyond the individual calf.

The breed module showed that lifetime output is decided by fertility and survival as much as by yield per lactation. A heifer calf reared well is your next replacement animal, saving you the price of buying one, or an animal you can sell. The reproduction module showed that the calf is a co-product, not a by-product, and that every extended calving interval is also a missing calf.

So the chain runs like this. Calving interval decides how many calves you get. Colostrum decides how many of them survive and thrive. Those two things together decide whether your herd grows, holds steady or shrinks, and neither of them requires you to buy anything.

This is why calf rearing sits in a dairy business course and not only in an animal welfare one. It is not a soft addition to the enterprise. It is one of the highest-return, lowest-cost management practices available anywhere in it.

Milk Feeding And Growth To Weaning

Once the colostrum days are behind you, the calf moves onto milk or milk replacer, and the job changes from immunity to growth. This lesson gives the sourced figures for that phase and the practices that go around them.

Start with the feeding rate. One veterinary source gives roughly four or more litres per day for a 40 to 50 kilogram newborn calf, typically split into two feeds a day.

Notice the split. Two feeds, not one. A calf's abomasum, the true stomach that digests milk, is small, and a very large single feed passes through poorly. Two feeds spaced across the day give better digestion and less scour, and the same is true of a third feed where labour allows it.

Next, the expected intake and growth. Total dry-matter intake is expected around 600 to 750 grams a day, of which about 450 grams a day comes from the liquid feed. The target daily liveweight gain is 400 to 600 grams a day for the first three to four weeks in a traditional, non-accelerated feeding system.

Those two figures work together, and they are worth reading carefully.

If about 450 grams of the 600 to 750 grams of dry matter comes from milk, then somewhere between roughly 150 and 300 grams a day is expected to come from somewhere else. That somewhere else is solid feed. So the figures themselves tell you that from early on, a calf is not supposed to be living on milk alone. Starter feed and good forage should be in front of her, in small fresh amounts, long before you plan to wean her.

A target gain of 400 to 600 grams a day is a real, checkable number, and it is the reason to weigh or measure your calves. If you cannot weigh, a girth tape used consistently, or even a marked stick against her withers each week, will tell you whether she is growing steadily or has stalled. A calf that stops gaining is telling you something is wrong before she looks obviously ill.

Now the practices around the figures.

Feed at the same times every day. A calf's digestion settles into a rhythm, and irregular feeding is a common and avoidable cause of scour.

Feed at a consistent temperature and concentration, especially with milk replacer. Sudden changes are another common scour cause.

Keep every bucket, teat and container scrupulously clean. This is the same argument as the colostrum lesson. A young calf has limited defences, and her feeding equipment is the most direct route into her.

Offer clean water from early on, separately from the milk. Water is what allows the rumen to start developing, because the microbes that ferment solid feed live in water. A calf offered only milk has no way to build the rumen she needs to be weaned onto solid feed, and this is one of the most common reasons a weaning goes badly.

Offer small quantities of fresh, palatable starter or good leafy forage every day, and throw away what she has not eaten rather than letting it go stale in front of her. She will eat almost none at first. That is expected. She is learning, and the small amounts she does take are what start building her rumen.

And watch for scour, which is the main killer at this stage. A calf that is scouring loses fluid fast and can go downhill within hours. Know before it happens who you would call and what rehydration you can give, in the same way the calving plan names a person and a phone number.

One note on commercial accelerated feeding systems, which feed much more milk for faster growth and delay weaning. Those exist and the source mentions them, oriented toward getting heifers into the milking herd by a target age, one figure given as 22 to 23 months. Read that as a commercial-system target rather than a universal African smallholder benchmark. It is useful mainly as a reminder of what the calf-rearing period is ultimately for: producing a heifer that starts earning as early as she soundly can, rather than one that first calves at three years old having eaten for all of them.

Weaning: The Rumen Decides, Not The Calendar

Weaning is where a lot of well-reared calves are quietly damaged, because it is usually decided by the calendar or by the value of the milk rather than by the calf.

Start with what is sourced. Weaning age is given as four to eight weeks old in a traditional system. Accelerated commercial growth programmes delay weaning further and are oriented toward getting heifers into the milking herd by a target age.

Now the honest gap, and it is a real one for this course. A specific, sourced African smallholder weaning-age recommendation, and evidence on the outcomes of early versus late weaning under zero-grazing smallholder conditions, was not available. So this module gives you the four to eight week figure with its origin attached, and does not pretend there is a validated smallholder number underneath it. Ask your extension service what they teach locally and what it is based on.

What this module can teach with confidence is the principle, and the principle is more useful than the number anyway.

The weaning decision should be driven by solid-feed intake, not by age alone.

Here is why. A calf is born functionally a single-stomached animal. She digests milk in the abomasum, and her rumen, the large fermentation chamber that will digest forage for the rest of her life, is small and undeveloped. It develops in response to solid feed. The act of eating starter and forage, and fermenting it, is what builds the rumen wall and establishes the microbes that live there.

So a calf that is eating a meaningful amount of solid feed and has a functioning rumen can be weaned off milk without a growth check. She simply switches from one source of nutrition to another that she is already using.

A calf weaned early on age alone, before her rumen and her intake have developed, will check in growth. She loses the milk and has nothing ready to replace it. She stalls, sometimes for weeks, and the reproduction and breed modules already showed you what a delayed heifer costs: a later age at first calving, more months of feeding an animal that produces nothing.

This document does not give a specific solid-feed intake threshold, because no sourced African criterion was available for it. What it gives you is the observation to make. Watch what she actually eats. Is she taking a meaningful amount of starter or leafy forage every day, consistently, or is she still picking at it? Is she chewing cud? A calf that ruminates is a calf whose rumen is working. That is the sign you are looking for, and it costs nothing to watch for.

Now the practical management of the weaning itself.

Do it gradually rather than in one step. Reduce from two milk feeds to one, then to none, over a period rather than stopping abruptly, so her solid intake has time to rise as her milk falls.

Do not change anything else at the same time. Weaning is a stress. Moving her, mixing her with new animals, changing her feed type, and dehorning or any other procedure should all be separated from weaning by a good margin, not stacked on top of it.

Keep the same starter and forage available through and after weaning, so that the feed she is switching onto is one she already knows and already eats.

And keep watching the growth measure from the last lesson. A girth tape or a marked stick, checked weekly through the weaning period, will tell you within a fortnight whether the weaning worked or whether she has stalled. If she has stalled, feeding some milk again while her solid intake builds is a far cheaper correction than months of poor growth.

One last honest word about the pressure that drives early weaning. Milk fed to a calf is milk not sold, and on a smallholding with one or two cows that is a real cash decision, felt every single day. Nobody should pretend otherwise. But the calf you are feeding is the animal that determines whether your herd grows, and a heifer stalled at weaning calves later, produces later, and costs you feed through every one of those extra months. Weaning her a fortnight early to sell a few more litres is one of the easiest ways in this whole course to win a small amount of money now and lose a larger amount later.

This lesson closes the module by putting the calf where she belongs in the business, and by giving you the housing figures to rear her properly.

Start with the business point, which has run through the whole course.

A heifer calf reared well is the future replacement or expansion animal for your herd. Through the calving-interval and breed economics you have already studied, she is worth as much to the business over her lifetime as several months of her mother's milk. That is the correct frame. She is not a by-product of milk production. She is a co-product, and often the more valuable of the two over a long enough horizon.

Run the logic once more, because it is the argument of the whole course.

The reproduction module showed that a cow calving every 670 days instead of every 365 produces roughly 45 percent less lifetime output, and that the loss is both milk and calves. The breed module showed that lifetime output is decided by fertility and survival as much as by yield per lactation, and that the F1 Jersey cross beat the F1 Holstein cross over a lifetime for exactly that reason. This module has shown that a calf whose colostrum management fails is documented to be sicker through early life, which costs treatment money, costs growth, and can cost the animal outright.

Put those together. Calving interval determines how many calves arrive. Colostrum and rearing determine how many of them become productive animals. Between them they determine whether your herd grows, holds or shrinks, and neither requires you to buy an animal.

That is why calf rearing sits in a business course. Not because calves are appealing, though they are, but because a smallholder who cannot buy growth has to rear it.

Individual calf pen floor. Built from sawn timber boards 37 to 50 millimetres thick and 75 to 100 millimetres wide, laid with a 25 to 30 millimetre gap between boards. That gap is the design detail that matters: it lets urine drain away through the floor while still giving the calf's feet secure footing. Individual pen dimensions by age. From birth to two weeks, 1,200 by 800 millimetres. At six to eight weeks, 1,200 by 1,000 millimetres. At six to fourteen weeks, 1,500 by 1,200 millimetres.

Calving pen. At least 3.3 metres by 3.3 metres, with a recommended provision of one calving pen per 30 cows, or one per 20 cows where calvings are seasonally concentrated. On a one or two cow holding those ratios are academic, but the dimension is not: 3.3 by 3.3 metres is the space a cow needs to calve safely, and it is worth measuring out and clearing before you need it.

Also remember, from the housing figures used elsewhere in this course, the floor space allowances for young stock as they grow: 1.4 square metres at one and a half to three months, 1.8 at three to six months, 2.1 at six to twelve months, and 2.3 at twelve to eighteen months. A heifer growing in a space sized for a calf is a heifer whose growth you are limiting with a wall.

One caution on all these figures. They come from a general structural design reference for cattle housing, written for cattle housing broadly rather than specifically for East African smallholder conditions. They are the best available numeric design guidance for this course, and they should be read as such: use the dimensions as a target and adapt the materials to what you can actually build with.

A final thought to end the module on. Everything in these six lessons happens in the first weeks of an animal's life, most of it in the first hours, and almost none of it costs money. Colostrum inside the first hour or two. Four litres, measured rather than guessed. A second feed before the day is out. A clean dry pen with a floor that drains. Solid feed and water in front of her early. Weaning when her rumen says so, not when the calendar or the milk price says so.

Do those things and you are, quite literally, producing next year's income from this year's calving. That is what makes this the module a dairy business cannot skip.

Module 6 capstone

Write a Calving Plan for your next calving and prepare everything before the cow calves, not after. Step 1: work out your next expected calving date by adding 283 days to the service date, and write it at the top of the plan. Step 2: prepare the calving place. Clean, dry, quiet, with room to move, and note that a calving pen is recommended at a size of at least 3.3 metres by 3.3 metres. Write down where yours will be and clear it now. Step 3: write your colostrum protocol on one page and pin it where anyone in the household can read it: get the first feed in as soon as possible, ideally within the first one to two hours and no later than six, aim for about four litres in the first day with a minimum of three litres of good colostrum within six hours, and give a second feed eight to twelve hours after the first. Step 4: decide in advance who will be present at the calving and who is called if anything goes wrong. Write both names and a phone number. Step 5: prepare the calf's housing to the pen dimensions in Lesson 6 and have it clean and dry before the calving. Step 6: prepare a feeding and weighing record sheet with columns for date, milk fed, solid feed offered and eaten, and any sign of scour or illness. Step 7: after the calving, fill that record every single day until weaning, and write at the bottom of it how many hours passed between birth and the first colostrum feed. That one number is the most important thing you will record all year.
