Peace Be Upon You

The Arabic greeting is a whole sentence with a fixed reply, and knowing the reply is what makes you sound like you belong.

السلام عليكم 🫱 → 🫲 وعليكم السلام
You say 'peace be upon you'. They say 'and upon you, peace'. The words come back to you reversed.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Say مرحبا — marḥaban — out loud ten times. It simply means hello and works anywhere.
  2. Now learn the big one: السلام عليكم — as-salāmu ʿalaykum. Break it into three: as-sa-LAAM · a-LAY-kum. Say each part, then join them.
  3. Learn the reply: وعليكم السلام — wa ʿalaykumu s-salām. Practise both halves with a sibling, one saying and one answering.
  4. Say شكرا — shukran — thank you — every time someone hands you something today. Count how many times. Aim for ten.
  5. Write مرحبا big in the sand or on cardboard and leave it where people walk past.
  6. Greet three real people in Arabic today and give the correct reply if anyone greets you back.

💡 Why it works

Greetings in Arabic are call-and-response, so learning only your half leaves you stuck the moment someone answers. Practising both sides means you can keep an exchange going instead of freezing, which is what turns a memorised phrase into a real skill.

🔥 Challenge

Greet someone with السلام عليكم and see whether they give you the right answer back. Teach them if they do not.
