ع 😮 ح 😤 خ 😾 ق 🗣️
🎒 What you need
- the shared phone, about 15 minutes
- a quiet corner
- your hand on your throat
✋ Do this
- Open the sound drill. Listen to ع, ح, خ and ق three times each with your eyes closed before you attempt any of them.
- Put your hand flat on your throat. Say ح — a strong breathy h, like fogging up glass but harder. You should feel it tighten under your hand.
- Now خ — the scratchy sound at the back, like gargling gently. Then ق — a k made as far back as your throat will let you.
- ع is the hardest. Listen five times, then squeeze your throat slightly and make a low 'a'. Do not worry about perfect. Worry about trying.
- Record yourself saying عين, حليب, خبز and قلم. Play your recording next to the model and pick the closest and the furthest.
- Put the phone down and say حليب out loud next to real milk, and خبز next to real bread.
💡 Why it works
These four sounds cannot be learned from writing, because there is nothing in English to compare them to — only a recorded voice can show you the target. Feeling the sound with your hand on your throat gives you physical feedback, so you know when you have found the right place and not just the right idea.
🔥 Challenge
Make the خ sound at a friend and see if they can copy it. Then teach them the throat trick.
