Counting to Ten at the Stall

Arabic numbers are the words you will hear first at any market from Nouakchott to Khartoum, so learn them by ear before you meet them on paper.

The digits on top are Arabic-Indic numerals — used on price tags across North Africa and the Sahel.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Listen to one to ten straight through twice. Do not repeat yet — just hear the rhythm.
  2. Now repeat after the audio, placing one stone for each number.
  3. Notice that ثلاثة — thalātha — three — uses the three-dot letter ث you learned in module 1. You can already read the first letter of it.
  4. Cover the screen and count your stones aloud in Arabic from memory.
  5. Copy the Arabic-Indic digits ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ onto a card. If you see these on a price tag, you can now read the price.
  6. Count real things aloud in Arabic today: mangoes, oranges, coins, goats. Out loud, where people can hear you.

💡 Why it works

Numbers are the fastest-paying words in any language because you can practise them on anything you can see. Learning the spoken numbers and the written digits together also means a price tag becomes readable, not just hearable.

🔥 Challenge

Ask an adult the price of something, then count that number out loud in Arabic before they can say it in your own language.
