Everybody in the House

Family words are the words you will say most often, and in Chinese most of them are one syllable said twice.

爸爸 bàba 妈妈 māma 哥哥 gēge 姐姐 jiějie
See the doubling? The character is written twice and the second one is said light and quick.

🎒 What you need

✋ Do this

  1. Open the audio list and listen to the five family words. Notice that the second syllable is always softer and shorter.
  2. Repeat each one five times until the light second syllable feels natural rather than forced.
  3. Point at each person in your household as you say their Chinese word aloud. Bàba. Māma. Gēge. Jiějie.
  4. Record yourself saying 我家有五个人 — wǒ jiā yǒu wǔ ge rén — 'there are five people in my family', changing five to your real number.
  5. Draw your family on paper, one stick figure each, and write the Chinese word under each figure. Stick it on the wall.
  6. Teach 妈妈 to your actual mother. She will remember it.

💡 Why it works

Words attached to specific real people are stored differently from words on a list — you are not memorising vocabulary, you are renaming people you already love. That is why family words survive long gaps without practice.

🔥 Challenge

Get your whole family to answer to their Chinese name for one full evening. Anyone who forgets loses a turn at something.
